"All Star Carpentry is great! Nick and his crew were professional, proficient, polite, and punctual! They were always there when he said they would be, and were considerate of us by keeping everything cleaned up. The work was outstanding and I have already decided to hire him for another project."

"Excellent work. The crew cut (painted the corners and trim line) each room with a small brush before they rolled on the paint. I have hired four painters this year and ETC is the only one I would hire again."

"EAD, Ernie, is the answer!! Incredible workmanship and customer service!! From the first call Ernie it was evident that this was going to be a good experience, I was WRONG It was GREAT!!! I actually am an owner of a roofing company but in Maryland so when I needed work done ASAP at my NJ home I turned to HomeAdvisor which lead me to Ernie. Its nice to experience a pleasant transaction with another service provider in your industry !! I would with NO hesitation recommend EAD, to anyone looking for HONEST and Quality WORK. I can't thank him enough for addressing my roof issue and fixing it honestly , he even sent me pictures as he addressed the issues , since I am back in Maryland while the work was being performed. Class A act. From one contractor to another Great JOB and from one Home Owner to another no reservations , the job will be done right and at a reasonable price!! Looking forward to working with him again."

"When first meeting them, I was very impressed. I had to have work done on my shed. New roof, frame and a ramp. They never criticized that it was a small job. They gave me a great price and came to do the job as promised two days after meeting them. They (Tony, Eric and Jimmy) are perfectionists and came on time. They cleaned up so good, you wouldn t even have known there was work done. HIGHLY RECOMMEND them. I actually took extra business cards to recommend them to my neighbors and friends. They are my contractors for life!!"

"Greg is a very talented carpenter and a professional architect. Our deck was in bad shape and we weren't sure if it can be restored. Greg worked on it and finished the restoration for us and it looks almost like a new one now. Our family is very happy with the quality of work. It is always refreshing and fascinating to witness great workmanship. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he pretty much can do any renovation projects from deck restoration to kitchen remodeling to all the way building a brand new home. I am happy to say that we have already hired Greg on a different project."

"Mr. Armando and his workers remodeled two kitchens for me.. mine and my tenants simultaneously. He was true to his word regarding completion time frame. He added extras like a shelf in a closet I asked him to create. It was truly a pleasure working with him. I look forward to him returning at a later time to do additional work for me."

"In 2024 our self-managed their faced our largest project to date on our 1965 building. The balcony membranes and stucco needed to be replaced and repaired. We did our due diligence and had companies give us proposals and estimates. We decided on they're after inspecting other buildings, researching their methods and comparing prices. We liked that they use their own teams rather than sub-contracting the work."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

The average cost of DIY window framing is about $40 to $60 in materials. If you hire a window treatment professional, you’ll pay for materials plus labor costs—anywhere from $250 to $800 per window. The final cost is highly dependent on the window size, as larger windows are heavier and more difficult to install, as well as the type of window framing material.

A cross brace for a fence gate should stretch from the top corner of the gate’s hinge side to the bottom corner of its latch side at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of the gate. This positioning distributes the bulk of the gate’s weight to the base of the post, taking pressure off the top hinge.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.
