"Acorn did a great job insulating my home. John explained the entire process and highlighted all the areas of focus. The crew arrived when they said and were very thorough and respectful. There was alot of dust, which was expected and his team covered as much as they could to help with the clean up. It's been over a week now and I have been monitoring heat usage thru Nest. There is a clear difference in the number of hours a day the furnace is on. I highly recommend John and the Acorn team for insulation work."

"I RECENTLY HAD MY ATTIC INSULATION REPLACED BY MASTER ATTIC. ALEX CAME OUT RIGHT ON SCHEDULE AND GAVE ME A FAIR PRICE. ( I DID HAVE 4 OTHER ESTIMATES) THE CREW LEAD BY ROBERTO WAS AMAZING. THEY WERE VERY CONSIDERATE, CAREFUL IN MAKING SURE THE AREA WAS SEALED OFF AND WERE VERY CAREFUL OF MY PERSONAL BELONGINGS. THEY DID A GREAT JOB IN REMOVING OLD INSULATION , VACUUMING OUT THE ATTIC ,SPRAYED AREA AND SEALED ANY OPENINGS. BEFORE THEY BROUGHT IN NEW INSULATION, THEY ASKED ME IF I WISHED TO TO VIEW THE ATTIC AND I DID. I WAS AMAZED EVEN AT THIS POINT, HOW CLEANED EVERYTHING LOOKED . (THIS INSULATION HAD BEEN UP THERE FOR 70 YEARS) NEW INSULATION WAS INSTALLED AND IT LOOKS GREAT. THE CREWED CLEANED UP EVERYTHING , EVEN VACUUMED THE AREA IN THE ROOM. ALL BAGS OF OLD INSULATION WERE REMOVED PROMPTLY AND I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE."

Metro NY Insulation is a green focused, cellulose insulation contractor that works with homeowners to help them save money on their heating and cooling costs. By sealing the home to prevent drafts from allowing heated (or cooled) air from escaping, home works more efficiently and uses less energy. We are accredited by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) for Building Envelope and Building Analyst to view the whole building as a system and allow it to breathe properly while still retaining the heat in the winter and the conditioned air in the summer. Proper ventilation and insulation leads to a healthier home, with fewer mold issues and less likelihood of developing ice dams in the winter. We do more than just add insulation, we do full scale weatherization to keep you and your home healthy. \n\nWe also do interior wall soundproofing to reduce noise transfer from room to room.\n\nWe use only 100% Borate infused National Fiber Cel-Pak so you won't have to worry about the toxic off-gasing or ammonia smell from inferior insulation used by other companies.\nAll employees are trained and trusted. NO SUBCONTRACTORS. Free in-home assessment. Costs are determined by the scope of the job - we do everything to the BPI specifications. \nWe do more than just insulate - WE WEATHERIZE!!!

"

This was a $150 big deal purchase. I don't think that went very well. It did not really mitigate our issues.  Later on we brought in other contractors from a different service to come in and seal some cracks and whatnot. They just sort of did the bare minimum. I think they charged more than the price of the deal because it was a larger surface area. They did not really solve any of the issues and hey didn't bring to light any other things that could be causing our insulation problems.

"We had been living in our house for 5 years and although the kitchen was a new addition, every winter my wife & I had noticed how noticeably the temperature differentiated especially after the winter of 2014/15.  And because it was a dirt floor with some wood and old construction debris strewn about.  I was not so keen on staying down there.  In doing my own investigation there was some piping and insulation under floor.
So when investigating estimates we called a number of "green" companies.  Out of the three companies that came, only Frank Petrullo with Eco Green Solutions, noticed the mold and a water leak coming from fridge line.  He took the time to show me where the water was coming, how mold had proliferated on the wood floor joists and beams.  The dirt floor was somewhat moist and light was visible from outside along foundation rim contributing to the mold and moisture in crawl space.  He explained each of our options and detailed the steps in sections of each estimate.
We opted to have a plumber fix the water leak, then franks crew came in, cleaned up the mold, then layed down the crawl space membrane, finally insulating floor & rim joist.  All in under two days.  The crew showed up on time, left the open sections of the house clean, and we immediately noticed a difference in kitchen and rest of house.  Walking around bare foot in kitchen is more comfortable, the kitchen is less noisy, and house humidity is maintained.

"After I called for an estimate, Joey came promptly and assessed our insulation needs. He took his time to explain everything and also gave valuable energy savings tips. We scheduled a date and he and his crew arrived on time and insulated our attic. Within a couple of hours they were done with a thorough clean up."

"It went pretty well. My house didn't get any warmer, because I discovered that I needed windows.  For some reason, they couldn't tell me that I needed windows. I put some plastic over some of the windows, and the change was almost instant. I would have rather put the money I spent for the insulation into putting in new windows. They were professional, and they did a good job. They just missed that I needed windows instead of insulation."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

STC (Sound Transmission Class) is a rating that describes how well a building material or assembly blocks airborne sound. A higher STC rating means less noise will pass through the material, providing better sound reduction. This rating system applies to various building components, including windows, doors, flooring, drywall, and insulation.

For context, a typical single-pane window has an STC rating of around 25 (where normal conversations are audible), while a well-sealed, double-pane window can exceed STC 45 (blocking loud speech and most music). It is important to note that for some products, like soundproofing drywall, the STC rating refers to the entire wall system, not just the individual panel.

Additionally, STC ratings are most effective for measuring sound reduction at mid-to-high frequencies, such as human speech, and may not accurately reflect how well a material blocks low-frequency sounds like bass music or thunder. Because of these factors, it is recommended to consult a professional to determine the right STC-rated materials for your specific soundproofing needs.

Traditional clapboard siding, particularly with panels made from wood, is not a significant insulator on its own. However, you can keep your home cooler in summer and warmer with "insulated clapboard siding," which is a type of vinyl clapboard siding with a built-in foam insulation. Consult a local siding contractor to determine whether insulated siding is right for your home.

The average U.S. homeowner pays $1,850 to insulate their home. However, the cost of insulation depends on the type, the size of your home, and who does the installation work.

The cost of foam board insulation depends on whether it's made from expanded polystyrene (EPS) or extruded polystyrene (XPS). EPS has the lower price point, usually costing between $0.25 and $0.50 per board foot, while XPS costs between $0.40 and $0.50 per board foot.

The cost of installing spray foam insulation is $2,760 on average, but this cost can be as low as $650 or as high as $7,700. The main cost factor is the size of the insulated area and the type of spray foam insulation.

Polyurethane spray foam costs between $0.44 and $1.50 per board foot, where a board foot is equal to the volume of a one-foot length of a board. More expensive options, like soybean or vegetable oil spray foam, range from $1.50 to $3.00 per board foot.

You should not use spray foam insulation in several specific areas. Avoid applying it in spaces exposed to high temperatures, such as near electrical boxes or recessed lighting, unless the foam is specifically rated for such use. Applying foam near electrical boxes can damage the wiring, and using it too close to lightboxes or recessed lights creates a potential fire hazard. Additionally, do not use spray foam in areas prone to shifting or movement, as this can lead to cracks and gaps in the insulation. Finally, open-cell foam is unsuitable for use below ground or in areas exposed to moisture because it can absorb water, which compromises its insulating effectiveness.
