"We had a new roof installed on our Victorian house last winter, and the roofer told us that the very old insulation bats in our attic rafters did not allow for a proper vapor barrier, endangering the warranty of the new roof. The roofer referred us to an affiliated company that recommended removing all the old insulation bats and installing new insulation bats in the attic rafters with a proper vapor barrier. That would have been very costly and would done nothing at all to improve our level of insulation. Fortunately, I decided to consult with Acorn before going further, because they have a solid A rating on Angie's List (the 10% AL discount did not hurt either). I was impressed by Mike Sheehan's approach. He carefully measured the space between the old insulation and the rafters and concluded that there was a sufficient vapor barrier there. But he pointed out that the house was seriously under-insulated, as we already knew from our high heating bills. He recommended leaving the old insulation in place, blowing R-49 cellulose insulation into the attic floor, and installing insulation bats in attic crawl spaces that had no insulation. He said that the new insulation bats in the attic crawl spaces located in a semi-finished attic room would make our second-floor den (located directly beneath the semi-finished attic room) much warmer. After 35 years of suffering from the cold drafts in the den, I was skeptical to say the least, but I decided to go ahead with Mike's plan, which was about half as costly as the original roofing company's estimate for a great deal more insulation. The workers came and did the job on the appointed day in May.
We have central ac, and there was some improvement in our energy bill last summer, but nothing too extraordinary. But since Mike had told us that the real gains would come in the heating season, I decided to wait until the next winter to review Acorn in Angie's List. Well, this has been an exceptionally cold late autumn and winter so far in New Jersey, and the results have been truly amazing. For the first time in 35 years, our den is comfortable all the time, and the whole house is comfortable. The energy and cost savings have been dramatic. The heat just doesn't escape upward from the second floor anymore. Here is the most astonishing thing that happened. When the outside temperature got down to about 0 F. a few days ago (unheard of in this area), I heard a strange noise and realized that the central ac had gone on! The thermostat for the ac on the second floor was set to 76 or 77, and because the ground floor is not as tightly sealed now as the second floor, in the extreme cold the disparity between the thermostat for the house heat on the ground floor (set at 70 degrees) and the upstairs heat, normally about 1 or 2 degrees, had increased to 6 or 7 degrees because of the insulation!
In short, we could not be more pleased with the job that Acorn did or the investment that we made in insulation.

"I RECENTLY HAD MY ATTIC INSULATION REPLACED BY MASTER ATTIC. ALEX CAME OUT RIGHT ON SCHEDULE AND GAVE ME A FAIR PRICE. ( I DID HAVE 4 OTHER ESTIMATES) THE CREW LEAD BY ROBERTO WAS AMAZING. THEY WERE VERY CONSIDERATE, CAREFUL IN MAKING SURE THE AREA WAS SEALED OFF AND WERE VERY CAREFUL OF MY PERSONAL BELONGINGS. THEY DID A GREAT JOB IN REMOVING OLD INSULATION , VACUUMING OUT THE ATTIC ,SPRAYED AREA AND SEALED ANY OPENINGS. BEFORE THEY BROUGHT IN NEW INSULATION, THEY ASKED ME IF I WISHED TO TO VIEW THE ATTIC AND I DID. I WAS AMAZED EVEN AT THIS POINT, HOW CLEANED EVERYTHING LOOKED . (THIS INSULATION HAD BEEN UP THERE FOR 70 YEARS) NEW INSULATION WAS INSTALLED AND IT LOOKS GREAT. THE CREWED CLEANED UP EVERYTHING , EVEN VACUUMED THE AREA IN THE ROOM. ALL BAGS OF OLD INSULATION WERE REMOVED PROMPTLY AND I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE."

"RetroFoam of Michigan deserves more than five stars. The representative who gave me an estimate was prompt and professional. The office staff who called to tell me installers were ahead of schedule was kind and courteous as I answered during a busy day at work. The crew who came to insulate my garage was extraordinary. They made sure my garage was left clean. They even mopped the garage floor before they left! The crew leader explained the process of insulating with foam and exactly how the holes in my walls would be patched before the team left. I am an educator of 30 years and a licensed builder. I've remodeled and flipped homes and have rental units. I'm used to swinging a hammer alongside others. This company is made up of hard-working people who charge a fair price and do exceptional work. I have advice for those that run the company - take care of your installation crews! They are exceptional! If you've read this far and are interested in having your house/garage insulated give them a call now. You will be happy you did. Now...I'm looking forward to enjoying a warm man-cave garage on cold nights!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

It is usually possible to install insulation yourself, but it’s often better to hire an insulation professional. An experienced insulation pro can determine which type of insulation is best for your space and the R-value get the most value and comfort in your home. Certain types of insulation can cause skin, eye, and lung irritation, and a professional will have the equipment necessary to keep themselves safe and limit the effect on your indoor air quality after the installation. Certain types of insulation—like blown-in and loose-fill insulation—demand a professional for proper functionality and safe installation.

While a few icicles on your roof are standard, a large accumulation can be a sign of a bigger problem, such as poor insulation. This is particularly true if you are also dealing with ice dams. If you have numerous large icicles, it is recommended to have a roofing contractor diagnose potential insulation issues and create a plan to solve them.

Unfortunately, pipes can freeze when exposed to prolonged freezing temperatures, whether or not you have installed insulation covers. Insulation covers, however, are still an excellent idea as they can reduce the chance of your pipe freezing by keeping the pipes closer to the temperature of the water inside the pipe.

R-value stands for resistance value and is a number assigned to insulation that states how good the insulation is at heat transference (insulation). The R-value of injection foam is around 4 which homeowners will be happy to know is actually quite good. Another benefit of injection foam versus fiberglass foam is that the colder it gets, the more injection foam retains its resistance properties, whereas fiberglass tends to lose its efficiency in colder temperatures.

Spreading tin foil over your windows works similarly to radiant barrier insulation, but not as well. It will reflect some of the sunlight that would otherwise come through the glass and warm up the inside of your home, so it might help a little to keep your home cool in the summer. However, the appearance isn’t preferable to blinds or drapes that can offer the same benefits. You might also consider tinting your windows instead, which is a more aesthetically pleasing change that can still block a good portion of the solar heat coming through your windows.
