"Unfortunately I had to part ways with my roommate and needed to change the locks asap. I called protector. They got here quick, explained the pros and cons of all the different locks that can be installed. I chose a multi lock cylinder. The technician was quick and polite. Thanks"

"I was accidentally locked out of my bathroom that morning.
Everything went very well with M&D when I called for their help.  The customer rep who answered the telephone had great customer service skills.  M&D were quick to respond and they managed my expectations around the locksmith's time of arrival.  M&D sent a very competent worker named Daniel who assessed the situation and described all my options and prices before moving forward.  Of course, I would have liked the total price to be lower but the locksmith was so professional that I decided to replace other old/missing locks in the house as well.
Daniel went back to the store, collected the additional door knobs and locks and returned to complete the rest of the job. He moved quickly and efficiently and was very pleasant to interact with.  In addition, he gave me quick tutorials on a couple of the new locks.  I was very pleased to have so much work done after having postponing the lock changes for so long.  M&D turned my bathroom lock-out accident into a positive experience!

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Newer, electric-powered door locks generally have a life span of five years or less. That’s thanks, in large part, to a phenomenon called planned obsolescence, in which products are programmed to need replacing after a certain amount of time. That’s also why older, manual, push-key locksets can last up to 30 years with regular cleanings and maintenance. When it does come time for a new set-up, know that the cost to change locks ranges from $130 to $500 on average.

A deadbolt differs from a regular lock in its design, construction, and security level. Regular locks are typically used for interior doors, such as for bedrooms and bathrooms, and provide minimal security. They are easy to install and use, often featuring a simple locking mechanism on the inside. In contrast, a deadbolt is one of the most secure locks you can install on an exterior door. Its internal construction is designed to withstand significant force, adding a crucial layer of security that can deter intruders. While deadbolts may be more expensive and complicated to install, they are cost-effective for the security they provide and are built to hold up to wear and tear.

If you don’t have your original key, the easiest way to obtain a copy is to call a locksmith. For house keys, your locksmith has several options for configuring a new key:

  • They can input a lock’s identification code into a database to obtain key-cutting instructions.

  • They could analyze the lock cylinder to determine how to cut a new key.

  • They can create an impression of the lock cylinder from which to cut a new key.

If you also have a standard door leading to your garage, install a robust deadbolt lock and reinforce the frame with security plates. Then, secure any windows with shatterproof glass or film to deter break-ins. Consider a smart garage door opener for your car entrance, enabling remote monitoring and control through your smartphone. Motion-activated lighting around the garage to deter intruders is a great way to amplify these security efforts. Lastly, educate your family on security practices, such as keeping the garage entrances closed and locked.

There are many types of deadbolts, but these tips work on most. First, address any grime buildup. A bit of WD-40 will loose up rust and dirt so the deadbolt can turn. Inspect the door and frame alignment if this doesn't resolve the issue. Adjust the strike plate or the deadbolt's position to improve alignment. If the problem persists, disassemble the lock to inspect for damaged or worn parts. If you are unsure how to do it, hire a local locksmith.
