"My parents and I live in a old brick apartment building in Hoboken that is from the 1880s. The bathroom in our apartment had not been updated since the 1940s. We needed help ASAP. We checked out Cesar s page and wanted to hire him immediately. The reviews speak for themselves. When he came into our apartment to give us a quote we knew that this was contractor we needed to get the job done. Cesar is affordable, friendly, and very accommodating to any issues or concerns you have before starting the project. Two massive issues with our project were that my dad has spinal & walking issues, so we needed the floors clear of all tools and materials at the end of the each day so that father could walk efficiently through the apartment. The other big issue was that we only have 1 bathroom, so Cesar agreed to work with us on pulling the toilet off and on as every day finished so that we did not have to leave our building to use the toilet. Him and his crew are the best and take pride in their work so that owner is happy with the final result. We brought the bathroom down to the bare bones and rebuilt it back up. I worked with him every step of the way to make sure that he needed all materials to get the job done in the time we needed. This project was an intense remodel with some of the hardest demo and substrate materials that an old bathroom can have. He didn t think anything of it. He has veteran experience in the field and this remodel only took 3 weeks. We are very impressed with Cesar s craftsmanship and professionalism and we will be hiring him again for any future interior projects."

"From the very beginning, and throughout the entire process, Mark Michaels of Great Designs Inc was an absolute pleasure to work with as my business expanded into a new commercial space. Mark was extremely responsive and communication was always prompt and efficient. The architectural drawings he created were completed much faster than expected and the ability to view the space in 3D and do a virtual walkthrough was fantastic. Aside from creating the drawings, Mark went above and beyond my expectations as he sought out various contractors that focus on the specialized type of work I needed to have done. Also, on several occasions, Mark was sure to contact the town and other agencies to check that various codes and requirements would be met. It was a great comfort knowing that Mark was taking the time to ensure every detail was covered. This proved to be especially helpful when applying for the numerous permits. Based on my experience with Mark Michaels, I highly recommend him to anyone seeking his services and I would not hesitate to contact him the next time the need arises."

"Ronda came to us through our general contractor. She assisted us in selecting our cabinets, counter tops, hardware and tile. She met with us multiple times at our house to work through the cabinet design. And we met with her multiple times at her studio and the tile shop to select our counter top and tile. Always ready to help, she is knowledgeable and has innate design ability. More than that, she can explain her design choices, yet is willing to discuss alternatives and work through the design process in a collaborative manner, bringing many ideas to the table – or kitchen, as it were. She listens to her clients and was able to translate our ideas into a comprehensive design. Throughout the process Ronda worked with our contractor and with us to make certain everything came together as planned. While there were a number of minor snafus, she was always there to make certain issues were resolved and to keep the job moving ahead. Cabinets and counter tops are a significant portion of the remolding cost. Cabinet manufactures are not all that interested in dealing directly with the customer. Rather, they work through their distributors. We purchased our cabinets through Ronda who has a strong working relationship with the manufactures she deals with and can easily work out issues. Thank you Ronda for a wonderful new kitchen!"

"I?ve had the pleasure of working with Jim (and his partner Justin) for a few years now.  Both are highly professional, exceptionally skilled and know their profession.  I?ve called them back and passed their names on to others because they are reliable and can be trusted with whatever job they take on.The first time I used them was for a complete HVAC system replacement on a home that was originally oil heat.  The home was in bad shape and the heating system was even worse.  It probably could have been fixed, but it was totally inefficient and I prefer to use natural gas to the expense and hassle of oil.

I will break down each rating with an explanation.

  • Price-  In addition to contacting Zip Air, I also received estimates from 5 other guys.  One was a large well known company.  One estimate came in lower, the rest were about the same or higher.  I wanted the job done correctly and from the minute they arrived they gave the impression they knew their stuff which is why I went with them.  I?ve worked with many contractors on many different projects and I can state from experience the lowest price isn?t always the best. Overall their prices were very competitive and the quality matches.

Quality-  The specific job mentioned above was done in November 2014.  After 2 winters and summer everything is still running strong.  I?ve had Jim come back on 2 other occasions to add an additional return and move a duct for a kitchen renovation.  The job looks professional and not slapped together.  Looking at the unit is is apparent time was taken to properly install the equipment and all peripherals that go along with it.   The system also passed the towns inspection as well when closing out the permits with absolutely no questions on the quality or installation.
Responsiveness-  Both Jim and Justin were responsive to any questions or concerns.  As in many older homes, the ductwork was somewhat undersized on the return.  Instead of leaving as is which I am guessing many places would do?Jim came back and installed a properly sized return.  Justin came back on his own time as well to help with the removal of the large old unsightly oil tank.
Punctuality-  Both Jim and Justin have been on time for each and every job they were called on.  In fact, they were early and sometimes waiting on me.
Professionalism - Both guys are extremely professional.  One major thing that stood out was when getting the estimates they were one of two companies that actually went through the house and took measurements of each room to determine the correct HVAC sizing. **This is very important**  Every other place just wanted to replace the original equipment with something of the same size regardless of if it was correct or not.
Job # 2 On January 18th, 2016 I had them replace my parents hot water baseboard boiler.  The system decided to fail on one of the coldest days of the year and within a day they had the new system sized, replaced and installed without any issue.  Other than PSEG which came out because of the worry free contract and gave some astronomical quote, knowing Zip Air we called them and did not feel the need to call any other contractors and get an estimate.  Their previous illustrations of quality, punctuality and professionalism went a long way in us giving them the job immediately without having to call anyone else.  The system works perfectly and looks nice as well.   I would also recommend them for plumbing jobs as well as Justin is a highly skilled plumber for issues other than heating and cooling related.
On both jobs, they came back after the equipment was installed to ensure its proper operation.
I don't usually write reviews as I am very busy, but these guys are impressive...Highly Recommended.

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.

By careful planning and reinforcement to maintain structural integrity.

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

Balcony construction or replacement typically requires a building permit from your local permitting authority. Safety and building integrity are the main reasons for the need to obtain a permit and the subsequent inspections. In some cases, especially cantilevered balconies, your municipality may also require the oversight and signature of a structural engineer.

Bow windows need support because they are large and extend out from the exterior wall of the home. Bow windows may extend 1 foot to several feet from the outside of the home, so you’ll need to provide additional support to handle this weight. A window contractor will be able to provide the proper amount of support for your new bow window.
