Yes, cinder blocks must be primed before painting. Without primer, your paint won't stick to the surface of the blocks. You should use a bonding and filling primer which fills all of the small pores of your blocks. Once the primer dries, you'll have a smoother surface to work with and your paint will stick easily to the blocks.

High-gloss paint is the most durable of the paint finishes. Most glossy paints are enamel paint made from oils, which gives them that hard, shiny surface with higher durability levels. Less durable matte finishes tend to come as acrylic, milk paint, or chalk paint. So if you’re looking for durable paint, go for one with a higher sheen, as it will be easier to clean and ideal for spaces that are subject to damage.

First and foremost, don’t skip the prep work. Even if you have the steady hands of a surgeon, mistakes happen, and they can potentially be catastrophic. Also, never underestimate how much paint you’ll need. Returning to the store is enough of a pain, let alone the streaks and uneven color you’ll get if a half-done wall dries before you can finish it.

First, make sure that you tape off all the areas that you don’t want to paint black. It’s harder to paint a light color over black than to touch up any lighter spots you missed. Once you’ve taped it off, make sure that the surface is clean and smooth, and then prime the wall with a tinted primer in gray. This step will help to transition from a lighter color to a darker one.

You should apply at least two coats of paint to your project, but some surfaces may benefit from a third coat of paint. Ensure you’ve waited the right length of time before applying a second or third coat of paint, and try to apply it evenly for a cohesive finish.
