"They did an excellent job repairing our situation. First Damien and Bob came out and inspected the area and Damien suggested what the problem was and he was correct. Made the appointment for the repair job and two guys came out and did the work. Very knowledgeable , professional and courteous workers. Very fair pricing also. They also replaced two outlets at our Daughter's house the same day. We would highly recommend them for anyone needing quality electrical repair."

"They did a great job with my electrical panel which had issues when I bought my home. Had other miscellaneous stuff that needed to be done as well. Small jobs welcome

"Mike was fantastic! The price for installation of recessed lighting was very fair. Mike took the time to go over what I wanted, gave me his feed back and was very professional. I was absolutely thrilled when the installation was complete. I would recommend A Shore Thing Electric to everyone I know. I would tell anyone looking to hire an electrician to call Mike first!!!!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Your outlet should be a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). These outlets will cut power off in the case of an electrical fire, keeping your home and family safe. Extension cords can also be GFCIs. A local electrician can replace older outlets with GFCIs, if necessary.

Each meter should have a serial number printed or engraved on the face of the meter. Make sure the serial number of the meter you are reading matches your account with the power company. If you live in an apartment complex, the meters are likely located all together. Yours should be labeled according to your apartment unit.

That depends on your setup. If a circuit breaker already has GFCI protection, then everything connected to that specific circuit is being monitored. You don’t need additional GFCI outlets on that breaker.

However, if the breaker is not GFCI, then you should have GFCI receptacles for at-risk outlets nearby water sources, because they are not receiving protection. Breakers in a breaker box can vary between GFCI and non-GFCI. Look for GFCI labels on the breaker or try to find the breaker model number to look it up if you aren’t sure.

The hot wire is typically black, but it's essential to use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm the electrical wire color code before working on it. Neutral wires are typically white. It’s vital to determine which wire is carrying electrical current before proceeding with any electrical work.

To upgrade electrical systems in older homes, you might need to reroute new wires with lath and plaster walls. That’s because it’s more challenging to get inside the walls of an older home compared to a modern home, which usually uses drywall. But there are easier ways to level up your electrical game in an older home. For instance, you can swap out an old furnace for a new electric heat pump, or you could use a heat pump for water heating.
