"We had our entire finished attic space insulated (walls, ceiling, floor of crawl space). We did this primarily for summer, so the air conditioning would actually work in the room (it was still too hot to inhabit last summer even with a massive air conditioner running constantly in it). It's still winter time, so we haven't been able to test it for the air conditioner, but we have noticed a difference in our heating. The mini-heater we have up there runs much more infrequently and the heat stays in the room much longer. So far it seems like they did a good job, but I'll definitely know when summer gets here. We opted to stay in the house while they installed the insulation (some of which was the spray foam). Craig made clear that it is highly recommended that the residents evacuate the home while the foam is being sprayed, but we couldn't leave our dogs there alone and I was working from home that day, so we opted to sequester ourselves on the first floor in the back room, which worked out just fine. I mention this because I assume most people wouldn't be home while the installation is occurring, but because we were we heard a lot of the banter that the crew was having. There was some yelling (in a friendly sense) between them, and we heard a bit of profanity. It didn't bother us at all, but if there are children in the home and you opt to stay inside during installation, keep that in mind. I have a feeling that if we had asked them to try and lower the volume a bit, they would have respectfully obliged. The crew was friendly and seemed to be very competent and knowledgeable. The crew used big rolls of plastic to cover the floor/stairs/furniture while working, so they try to make as little imprint as possible which is nice. There was some plaster dust and insulation left over in very small amounts on the floor and couch in the attic, but I attribute that to the fact that it's virtually impossible to prevent anything from touching the floor. Overall, they left the space very clean and they clearly tried their best to prevent anything from falling through. I'm mentioning this not because it's a complaint, but because I want people to have a realistic expectation of the process. Craig called me on the morning of the scheduled installation to let me know that they were running a little behind, which didn't cause any issues at all. I think they were only 30 minutes to an hour late in total, but it was communicated to me very well and it was obvious that they were trying to be as punctual as possible. I got a call from Craig a few weeks after the installation because he wanted to check in with me to see how well it was working. It's a simple gesture, but really helped make me feel like they care and take pride in their work. Again, I want to state that we have not yet had a chance to test the insulation for the primary reason we had it installed, but we have noticed a difference in heat retention and I'm very hopeful and excited to try it out in warmer weather. Based on the scheduling, installation process, and customer service: I highly recommend NP Energy and we will certainly be turning to them again if we need any more insulation."

Customers say: Quick response

"Alligood did a great job with the project; they were punctual, professional and thorough.  We had a couple follow up items after the initial insulation job and they came to address those as well.  Jeff and Matt were great to work with and they were very flexible on the approach to insulating our attic and basement crawl space...including some added areas above our drop ceiling in the finished basement.
For the first time since we've lived in our house (7 years), we no longer need a space heater in the basement to maintain a warm temperature during the winter (and temps have been in the teens in recent days).  Additionally, we've always had to play games with our thermostat (located on the main floor) to have the upstairs bedrooms be the right temperature at night.  Since the insulation, our house is balanced with temperature across the floors for the first time!

"I RECENTLY HAD MY ATTIC INSULATION REPLACED BY MASTER ATTIC. ALEX CAME OUT RIGHT ON SCHEDULE AND GAVE ME A FAIR PRICE. ( I DID HAVE 4 OTHER ESTIMATES) THE CREW LEAD BY ROBERTO WAS AMAZING. THEY WERE VERY CONSIDERATE, CAREFUL IN MAKING SURE THE AREA WAS SEALED OFF AND WERE VERY CAREFUL OF MY PERSONAL BELONGINGS. THEY DID A GREAT JOB IN REMOVING OLD INSULATION , VACUUMING OUT THE ATTIC ,SPRAYED AREA AND SEALED ANY OPENINGS. BEFORE THEY BROUGHT IN NEW INSULATION, THEY ASKED ME IF I WISHED TO TO VIEW THE ATTIC AND I DID. I WAS AMAZED EVEN AT THIS POINT, HOW CLEANED EVERYTHING LOOKED . (THIS INSULATION HAD BEEN UP THERE FOR 70 YEARS) NEW INSULATION WAS INSTALLED AND IT LOOKS GREAT. THE CREWED CLEANED UP EVERYTHING , EVEN VACUUMED THE AREA IN THE ROOM. ALL BAGS OF OLD INSULATION WERE REMOVED PROMPTLY AND I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Reflective and high R-value batt or roll insulation are often considered energy-efficient, offering significant thermal resistance benefits.

Because of the moisture concern, open-cell foam requires a vapor barrier. The barrier protects against high humidity and moisture exposure in rooms such as basements, bathrooms, or exterior walls. It wouldn't be necessary in dry interior spaces.

Yes, exposure to fiberglass insulation can cause harm to your skin and eyes. However, this typically refers to the fiberglass insulation that is mostly used in walls and attics. Fiberglass doors don’t pose risks for fiberglass exposure because they're fully encased in polymer cladding.

Exposed ductwork can sweat just like ductwork placed behind walls, sometimes even more so. Ductwork sweats—like a cold drink on a hot day—because of a temperature imbalance between the air in the duct and the air in the room. In a crawl space or wall, this temperature can equalize faster due to the small space but in lofts and open rooms, that wouldn’t happen as quickly. Many people insulate their ducts for this reason.

On average, insulating an attic costs about $2,500, with a typical range of $1,500 to $3,500. The final price often depends on the attic's size, with costs generally falling between $1 to $3 per square foot. For example, insulating a 1,800-square-foot attic would likely cost between $1,800 and $5,400.

If the project involves removing old insulation, this can add an average of $900 to the total cost, bringing a full removal and reinsulation project to around $3,000.

Several factors influence the overall cost:

  • Insulation Type: Prices per square foot vary significantly by material.

  • Reflective: $0.50–$1.50

  • Blown-in: $1–$4

  • Batt: $2–$4

  • Loose-fill: $2–$5

  • Spray foam: $2–$5

  • Structural insulated panels (SIPs): $4–$7

  • Project Complexity: Factors like sealing air leaks, poor attic accessibility, and required inspections can add to the cost.

  • Removal Issues: The discovery of mold, asbestos, or pests during the removal of old insulation can substantially increase the price.
