"It has been over a year since Tommy completely transformed our back yard. He rebuilt and added to a huge 75' x 10' retaining wall, then put in a gorgeous paver patio, front steps, and a walking path. Finally he stuccoed the entire lower level of our house. This was a massive project that he and his crew completed ahead of schedule. Tommy and his crew were always on time and worked diligently all day long, no matter how terrible the weather was. We trusted him with all his suggestions and advice, and he proved to be extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of this multi-faceted project. The end result of his hard work exceeded our very high expectations. If you are looking for someone who provides top-notch work and is a pleasure to deal with every day, choose Masonry by Tommy based in Lodi, NJ. They will leave you as impressed and grateful as we are!"

"I was very pleased with the focused attention to detail and professionalism displayed by the two technicians. After performing the work, they discussed the condition of the fireplace and future conditions to keep an eye on as the unit continues to be used. I would definitely utilize Gothic Construction again. Good work!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

No, a chimney crown is not the same as a chimney cap. A chimney crown is a flat cement area on top of a masonry chimney. It starts where the masonry part of the chimney ends at the very top and domes upward toward the flue opening. A chimney cap sits on top of the crown over the flue. It is usually made of metal and allows smoke to escape without letting in rainwater.

They provide excellent heat retention and durability and add a classic aesthetic to a home.

No, not all chimneys need a damper. However, most chimneys do, especially in newer homes. Most gas-burning fireplaces cannot function safely without a damper. Only some older wood-burning fireplaces can function safely without one. A chimney without a damper is essentially just an open hole in the roof of your home.

With a little ingenuity, an old fireplace insert can be transformed into a decorative centerpiece that infuses new life into any room. Consider placing LED lights or candles inside to create a captivating display that simulates the warm glow of a fire. Another option is to repurpose the insert as a charming bookshelf by adding rustic shelves within the firebox. For plant lovers, converting the fireplace insert into an indoor garden is a perfect way to bring nature indoors. You can also transform it into a stylish wine rack.

A fireplace hearth is a fireproof flooring material that extends out from the base of the fireplace and into the room. Hearths can be made of brick, ceramic, marble, limestone, and more. A hearth serves the purpose of decreasing the fire risk in the area directly around the fireplace. If flying embers hit carpet or wood, they’ll spark and create a fire. But if they hit something like tile or granite, they’ll simply go out.
