"In June, I hired Castlton Environmental Contractors to remove an abandon oil tank from my property. Reasonably priced, the entire staff from Carmine to Jennifer, were extremely courteous, helpful and proficient, above and beyond expectations. The crew removed the oil tank methodically and seamlessly, with no disruption to my house. In addition, they handled all the mandated filing, obtained the village permit and assured compliance with state DEC regulations. Most importantly, they were available for all inquiries during the entire process."

"Had the opportunity to experience Lilco's work on several projects. These guys always had a professional attitude and took the time for all preparations and quality control. They did not leave a mess or unwarranted damages like so many fly-by-night contractors tend to do. They even magnet swept driveways for screws/nails whenever they finished loading out for the night. The owner is always up front about any costs, with no hidden charges to get the jobs done."

"I hired them to remove an oil an from my crawlspace. They called a couple days ahead to confirm the exact time so I could prepare my own schedule and move my personal stuff out of the way for them. (The only access to the tank was though an interior door in our library, across my basement office, then crouch into the crawlspace) They arrived ready to work at near exactly the minute they promised. They were neat, quick, polite, and efficient. They put down plastic tarps so no nasties were tracked through the house. They got the permit, called for the inspection, secured the town approval and gave me copies of all the closure documents. I did nothing except write the check. No fuss, no muss, all done and over."

Customers say: Quick response

"Was struggling to find a reliable guy to do some paver work as well as a retaining wall for my backyard for the summer. I was recommended Art to come by. He was able to get a move on things quick. He had incredible attention to detail and was in constant communication with me. Gave some great advice about water drainage with the new patio and way to prevent stagnation of water. He also gave great advice on maintaining the area to ensure the longevity of the project. Overall great job and looking forward to having him do my front walkway as well!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

You do not have to dig footers for a deck as long as it meets local code and holds up to weather in your area. If you live somewhere that experiences high winds and earthquakes, you may need to dig for your deck posts. Deck blocks, post anchors with base plates, and helical pile systems are the three no-dig deck post options you can choose from if local code permits.

No, a ditch isn’t a trench. A ditch is an open, relatively shallow channel that’s carved out of the ground and used for drainage purposes. In contrast, a trench is a deeper excavation that’s entirely underground. Trenches have many uses, including gas lines, sewage systems, and electrical wiring. Unlike trenches, ditches don’t get filled back in with dirt after they’re dug.

Prior to excavation, you should prepare the dig site and call 311 before you sign anything.

To get your site ready for excavation, you should move anything in the area that isn’t affixed to the land. You can save money on the excavation by removing hardscaping, including walkways, decks, concrete patios, and paver patios.

Before you carry out any digging, you should call 311 to confirm that there are no utility lines running through your excavation site. Skipping this step could lead to severe injury and property damage if your excavator hits a water, sewage, or gas line.

Yes, you can excavate in the winter, but it might make the job harder. Frozen ground is harder to dig, and snow or ice can make the work site more hazardous. A contractor may need special equipment and techniques, such as ground-thawing methods, to break through frozen soil. Although winter excavation is possible, it may take longer and be more costly than excavating during warmer months.

Tree experts don’t advise against digging through tree roots, but instead encourage caution and consultation with a local arborist to make sure you don’t damage the tree’s structure or interrupt its water or nutrient intake. An arborist can recommend specific practices when digging and help prune the roots or dig a trench for utilities with a tool that can remove soil without touching the tree’s roots.
