The main task was to replace a whole house generator and, as it turned out, upgrade/rationalize multiple older panels servicing a big home, apt and shop. Charles presented several options with rough estimates, I picked one and he gave a firm estimate with itemized parts list and labor. We picked a date and Charles executed the plan…as planned. A little color. Charles is a big, fit, articulate young man with a strong sense of how a professional ought to comport himself. He started work on the main panel in my garage. Late November in NH. His shoes were sitting by the door and he was working in his socks. I didn’t expect it but what a pleasure to find such a pro. What about $ you ask. Breakers are designed to trip and be reset, so there’s no countdown to when it will malfunction. The danger lies in a break tripping multiple times in a row without—well, a break. The breaker and the wires need time to cool down after an overload. Multiple tripping in short succession exacerbates the problem that breakers are preventing, overheating the electrical components and causing damage. That damage can extend to the breaker itself, so a breaker that trips a lot in a short timespan may trip accidentally afterward.

You should never plug a normal 120v appliance into a special 240v outlet, as it can quickly burn out the appliance. This will cause irreparable damage to the appliance and, in worse case scenarios, cause damage to your circuit breaker. Check your appliance’s rating before plugging it into a 220v outlet to avoid electrical disaster.

A ground wire is not required for GFCI to work. A ground is a third wire in an outlet in addition to the live and neutral wires. It serves as an escape conduit for electricity in case of a short circuit. If a ground wire is present, installers should connect it to the appropriate terminal. Otherwise, a GFCI will work fine without it.

You can add an electrical outlet outside by sending a wire through the wall from an existing interior outlet. Without having to open up walls, you can thread a new electrical cable from the existing outlet through the wall and to the exterior. You’ll need to cut a hole in the siding to place your new outlet. Ensure that your outdoor outlet is a GFCI outlet (ground fault circuit interrupter outlet) per the National Electrical Code. It’s best to hire an electrician to add an outdoor outlet unless you have previous electrical experience.
