"Kevin called me back the same day to schedule a visit and give me a quote. He showed up on time, was very thorough and honest. He originally scheduled the work for a couple weeks out due to some remaining exterior jobs they were still working on, but put me on the 'rainy day' schedule. Lucky me, it did rain and they were able to get the job done even sooner than I expected. Jeremiah and Damien did a FANTASTIC job on the bathroom. I can barely recognize it with how good it looks compared to before. Exceeded my wildest expectations. I would highly recommend K-Nells, and will be using them in the future for any painting needs."

"When we purchased our New England 1910 home and found East Coast Construction and Development Inc. to renovate, it was the best experience ever. They delivered everything that they promised and more! Quality and reliability, communication and patience with my ever changing mind! We had the home remodel throughout several rooms. They installed Stainless steel appliances, quartz counter top in kitchen (total gut job!) Installed vinyl replacement windows, engineered flooring, updated bathrooms, tiled shower, brand new carpet and fresh interior paint. We also had a pine wall installed! Came out perfect! I couldn’t be more thankful to East Coast Construction and Development Inc. for all the work! East Coast Construction and Development Inc."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Various kinds of substances and deck preservatives act as protective coatings for wood to prevent rot, which is caused by water getting into the wood and creating cracks and splits. Stains, paints, and sealants are the three best options to protect your wood, but there are also oils, varnishes, and waxes available. You’ll need to reapply sealant at least once per year, and you should inspect your wood deck regularly to look for signs of damage or general wear and tear.

Wood stain is typically dry to the touch within 6 to 12 hours, but it is not fully cured at this point. You should wait at least 24 hours before applying a second coat or a protective finish. For surfaces like decks, avoid walking on them for at least 24 to 48 hours, and wait even longer before placing furniture. The full curing process can take from 24 hours to one week, depending on the type of stain. Factors like high humidity and cold temperatures can extend drying and curing times, so it's wise to allow for extra time in these conditions.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.

DIY is possible but presents risks of uneven surfaces or improper adhesion; professionals offer expertise to ensure a lasting finish.

It’s best to use an exterior latex acrylic paint to promote maximum adhesion to composite decking. This flexible paint type can better cope with the natural expansion and contraction that can occur with composite deck boards. Oil-based paints won’t adhere as effectively and are more likely to crack and peel as the boards flex. Testing whether your chosen paint will stick on an inconspicuous section or a spare board is a good idea.
