"I had CO2 coming into my house from the oil burning furnace (located in basement) via the wood burning portion of the fireplace (located in living room). This is definitely a safety issue and Hoyt Masonry LLC called within minutes of me putting the information on Angi. He came out the following day and determined a liner had to be installed in the section where the furnace exhaust is piped up through the fireplace. The current one was comprised somehow and leaking over to the wood burning portion of the fireplace. The new stain steel liner had a lifetime manufacturer warranty and was the material recommended by another vendor. Based on the discussion with the other vendor, the price was fair. The liner was installed in a few days, considering he had to overcome supplier chain issues, and a hand injury which required immediate attention that day. He showed up the next morning at 7am to complete the job. ( He felt bad he couldn't get it done the same day). We still had some lingering CO2 smell in the living room and finally determined the bat cover over the exterior fireplace entrance needed to be changed ( installed less than 1 year earlier). Have no had any other issues after getting original installer (pest control company) to change the cover, During this time, Sean came back to check that there were no issues with the new liner and helped debug the problem (always got back to me when I had some questions). Sean and his crew worked fast, returned my calls/texts in a reasonable amount of time, informative, fair price, and left no mess. Would definitely use them again"

"The chimney work on our home was extensive, and seeing it handled properly made a huge difference. The exterior was repaired and reinforced so it’s solid, weather-resistant, and no longer deteriorating the way it was before. The focus was clearly on long-term durability rather than just appearance, and the finished result blends well with the house while feeling much more secure. Communication throughout the process was straightforward, and the work showed a lot of care and experience. If someone we know ever ends up dealing with similar chimney issues, this is exactly the type of work we’d want them to have done."

"Gary was great to work with. He did beautiful work around our fireplace. We are so pleased with it. Gary was great at communicating with us about what we wanted and kept us up to date on how things were going since we couldn t be there for the construction. The price was reasonable too. Would be happy to recommend him."

Small jobs welcome

"I had them do a cleaning and inspection of my chimney and they found damages to the brickwork and the top of the chimney. They installed a new cap and their cost was so reasonable. All their work is guaranteed as well, which is reassuring. They were clean, efficient and courteous. I would highly recommend Handy Andy and in fact they are doing an estimate for my neighbor to whom I recommended them to."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

A 40-pound bag of wood pellets can provide a solid 24 hours or so of burn time, though the exact length may vary. If you’re using your pellet stove as an exclusive heat source during the winter, you’ll need an estimated 100 to 150 of those 40-pound bags, depending on how hot you like to keep your home, its size, the climate, and other factors.

The short answer is yes, but the longer answer is more complex. Unless the fireplace is ventless by design, you’ll need some type of exhaust pipe system to safely send fumes and other harmful byproducts out of the house. Even then, ventless fireplaces are not always permitted because they do keep the byproducts inside of your house. Ventless fireplaces are safest when installed in spaces that are themselves well-ventilated, like large rooms with lots of windows.

Fireplace inserts have several potential disadvantages. The cost of the insert and its installation can be a significant investment, as the process can be complicated and expensive, particularly if modifications to the existing fireplace are necessary. Aesthetically, some people find that inserts lack the traditional look and authentic ambiance of an open, crackling fire. There are also ongoing costs for maintenance, cleaning, and fuel. Fuel type can be a limitation; for example, an insert may be unusable if you don't have access to its specific fuel source. Maintenance and repairs can also require specialized services, especially for gas or electric models. Finally, while an insert is more efficient than an open fireplace, it may not heat a home as evenly as a central HVAC system.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that chimneys and their associated elements like fireplaces, vents, or stoves should be cleaned at least once a year before the start of seasonal use. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, a chimney should be cleaned when there is 1/8 inch of soot buildup. If there’s more than that, creosote—a flammable byproduct of burning wood—can form and increase the risk of a chimney fire.

You should use an angled brush to first paint the mortar lines, then go in with a high-density roller to evenly paint the bricks one at a time. You can also use a flat paintbrush to paint individual bricks, but a roller is faster and easier to use thanks to its longer handle and wider surface area for coating the bricks. To finish, go in with the paint brush for edges or hard-to-reach areas.
