"I tried Sod for my yard twice but my German Shepard killed it. I figured I give this a try and it has been two weeks so far and I feel it is one of the best things I have done. Yard looks great and the crew that put it in did an awesome job. They did a lot of work to level out the yard and to secure the turf down. Anyone is welcome to come and check this out in Lowell Ma. "Frank was very easy to work with and informative. He was quick to respond to any questions or concerns I had about the work to be done. We had a lot of overgrown shrubs that needed to be removed and the yard regraded. Everything was completed in a timely manner and we would hire him again if needed."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

The best size rock for your landscaping depends on the design, as different boulders serve different purposes. If you want to group boulders to create a natural-looking cluster, you’ll need a range of sizes. Otherwise, here are some suggestions:

  • Small boulders (smaller than 12 inches across): Best for landscape edging and fire pits

  • Medium boulders (12–24 inches): Best for retaining walls and water features

  • Large boulders (more than 24 inches): Best as standalone landscaping features, steps, or walkways.

Of course, you can mix and match sizes to create a unique display.

By definition, gardeners are experts at designing and maintaining outdoor gardens. Their job duties extend far beyond choosing the right plants for the area, which in itself is a job—they also help maintain the health and well-being of the plants. Gardeners work independently or for landscapers, nurseries, or horticulture design companies.

Landscaping prices are sometimes negotiable, but it depends on the professional with whom you’re working. In most cases, you’ll have a better chance of negotiating prices down the more work you have done. Your pro might be willing to discount labor if they’re guaranteed a large job. You can also ask your landscaper to recommend more affordable materials that will still bring your vision to life to save.

A full backyard renovation can cost between $15,000 and $50,000, depending on the scope of the project. Excavation, materials, and labor costs all contribute to the final cost of updating your outdoor spaces, and expensive features like a pool, a fence, or hardscaping carry a high price tag.

The average cost for landscaping is around $3,500, but prices can range from as low as $200 for simple DIY projects to $14,000 or more for extensive work. Several factors influence the final price, including your geographic location, yard size, project scope, chosen materials, site preparation, and the type of landscaping involved. Professional landscaper labor costs typically range from $50 to $100 per hour.

For a smaller budget, you can focus on softscaping projects like adding mulch, flowers, and shrubs, which might only cost a few hundred dollars if you do the work yourself. A budget of around $5,000 could cover projects like a simple patio, new plants and tree trimming, or a water feature. More extensive hardscaping projects, such as pergolas, patios, and walkways, can push the budget to $14,000 or more. For example, a flower bed installation averages between $800 and $3,000, while landscape lighting installation can cost from $2,000 to $6,000.
