"I had an excellent experience with McBrien Fire & Flue and would highly recommend them to anyone needing chimney work. My chimneys were in need of quite a bit of attention, including masonry repairs, cleaning, and new chimney caps. From beginning to end, the team at McBrien Fire & Flue was professional, kind, knowledgeable, reliable, and honest. They took the time to explain what needed to be done, answered my questions clearly, and kept me informed throughout the process. I never felt pressured or unsure about the work being recommended, and it was obvious that they genuinely cared about doing the job correctly. The quality of the finished work was excellent, and it gives us tremendous peace of mind knowing that the chimney has now been properly repaired, cleaned, and protected. It can be difficult to find contractors who combine excellent workmanship with honesty, reliability, and genuinely good customer service, but McBrien Fire & Flue certainly does. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!"

"Al was fantastic! He clearly explained that my fireplace was shutting off as a safety feature due to low oxygen levels. He also reassembled the logs in the firebox and showed me the proper way to start and stop the fireplace. Highly recommend his service!"

"We hired Josh to completely transform our fireplace area and couldn’t be happier with the results. From the initial inspection to the final install, everything was explained clearly and handled professionally. The stonework and stove setup came out absolutely beautiful and completely changed the feel of the room. Josh was clean, punctual, and took real pride in his work. The before and after difference is night and day. I’d highly recommend him to anyone looking for quality chimney or stove work done right."

"Jim called back within a day of me requesting an estimate and came by a couple of days later and followed up with a written estimate by email. He knew immediately what had caused my front steps to fail. He started the work in a week or so. I was please that he offered me some choices and what would cost more or less. He was able to use most of the existing brick and stone. He updated me each day on how the project was going. Jim was great to work with and did a fabulous job. I would recommend Celtic Masonry without reservation."

"I’m so happy I hired legacy chimney. They were extremely personable, and left my home exactly how they found it when they were finished with the job— We have young children, and that was definitely a concern but I would have never known they were here. Cannot recommend them enough!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

If you have a gas fireplace, you should be able to see a vent exiting the fireplace directly to the outside of your home. You may also see gas lines leading to the fireplace. If the firebox in the fireplace is completely empty, it’s a wood-burning fireplace. There should be no burners or igniters in the fireplace.

Cleaning your own chimney can be risky, especially if it hasn't been done in a long time and you lack the proper tools, knowledge, and safety equipment. The process involves getting onto the roof and handling soot, which poses safety issues. Remember, inhaling chimney soot is a significant health risk. Wearing the proper respiratory equipment is required.

For most brick cleaning jobs, including fireplace bricks, use a masonry sponge and a gentle cleaner. A simple solution of equal parts water and vinegar, or a few drops of dish soap in a bowl of water, can effectively remove grime. For tougher stains, you can use a dedicated masonry or fireplace cleaner. It is crucial to wet the bricks thoroughly with water before applying any cleaning solution to prevent the brick from absorbing it, and to rinse the surface completely afterward. Harsher cleaners containing bleach or ammonia should only be used as a last resort, and they should never be mixed together.

According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), the leading cause of house fires is cooking accidents, followed by fires started by heating equipment. Electrical issues are the third most common cause of house fires. The best way to keep your home protected is to use caution when cooking and never leave a stove or oven unattended while in use. You can also keep up with chimney cleaning and avoid using space heaters to reduce the risk.

Gas-powered fireplaces seem to be the most desirable type for homebuyers, per a Redfin report on homebuying trends. That said, any fireplace that has been maintained well and is in safe, working condition could be a draw for buyers, regardless of whether it uses wood logs, propane, or electricity as fuel.
