"Decked Out offered a bid to do the work in the winter of 2018 during warm periods when it was their less busy time).. The work began well but was not completed tho' there were multiple warm periods. I tried to keep in touch via voice mail from February thru the fall of 2018 but no one returned to finish this project. I did talk with Shane one time in the fall and he said the company was having some problems and that he was aware that the job had not been completed yet but was on their list for completion. That never happened and finally in the summer of 2019 I hired another contractor to complete the deck. I made an initial 1/2 payment that Decked Out requested to buy materials. Then I made a big mistake (when they were about 3/4th done) and they said they needed the money to complete the project - and I wrote them a check. They took the money but never came back. I explored taking the company to small claims court but was advised it would be cheaper to hire someone else to finish the project and chalk the money loss as a lesson to never pay in full until the work is completed! This is very disappointing because the workers seemed so pleasant and the work they began seemed to be acceptable."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

Minor fixes like patching leaks or repainting are DIY-friendly, but structural repairs require professional expertise.

There are several methods of supporting a balcony. Very small balconies, such as Juliet balconies that don't include any usable floor space and don't need to support human weight, may simply require supporting bolts drilled into the home's structure. Cantilevering is a method that requires no additional exterior supports, and larger balconies typically need posts and footings to carry the weight from below.

Building codes typically require handrails if your porch is 30” or more off the ground. However, it's important to check your local regulations and building codes to make sure, as this can differ depending on your location. When in doubt, check with a local porch handrail pro, who will know the local codes and be able to get permits if any are required.

Most two-person porch swings are rated to hold up to 500 pounds or more. However, each swing manufacturer has its own recommended weight limits, with some as low as 250 pounds while others are as high as 800 pounds. Always double-check the manufacturer’s guide and stay within the recommended range when in doubt.
