"Cut the cord on cable. Finally! However, because we still wanted local channels and PBS, we needed an antenna. I called Atomic Service and was able to set up an appointment within a few days; Steve showed up right on time. He looked at possible indoor locations for the antenna and finally decided on the attic. Although he had been planning to sell us an antenna, it turned out there was a disconnected antenna in the attic left by the previous homeowners. He did not push the new antenna sale, which saved us around $70. Ill quote Steve, there was no reason to increase your materials cost if the antenna already up there works. He was able to run the coax from the antenna to the outside of the house where our cable main line was located. He made sure that our cable modem (yes, we still have somewhat of a cable bill) was connected directly to the cable main line. When splitting the antenna cable, he made sure that the TV we watch most received the strongest signal. Outside of the house, the coax was hidden beautifully; wife approved! Finally, he tested (and re-tested) everything to ensure all channels were clear and our WiFi signal was strong. He was not satisfied when the local channel we watch most wasnt coming in clearly on one of our TVs, so he went back up into the attic (changed the transmission leads on the output terminal of the antenna) and got all channels to come in perfectly on all three of our TVs. He gave me a call the next day to see if this was still the case. Overall, Steve was professional, knowledgeable, courteous, and clean. He was very patient with me and was more than willing to answer any questions I had along the way. Plus, his rate was extremely reasonable; for my money you cant beat the level of service Steve provided! I would recommend Steve to anyone looking to cut the cord on cable that needs antenna installation."

TV Antenna questions, answered by experts

Outdoor TV antennas are often worth it, as the signals broadcast in your area are always stronger outside. If you have an indoor antenna that isn’t performing well, call a TV antenna installation company to come out and use a signal checker to see if a stronger signal is available on your roof, as it often will be. Outdoor antennas require longer cables, which can decrease the quality of the picture, but a professional should be able to find a position where cable length is minimized, and the available signal is strongest for ideal performance.

The cost to repair your TV antenna is around $200 for the average homeowner. However, charges could be as low as $60 or as high as $450. Factors such as multidirectional or unidirectional, indoor or outdoor, and amplified or non-amplified all play an essential role in determining the cost of your repair. For example, outdoor antennas cost more on average to repair than indoor ones, much like amplified antennas cost more to repair than unamplified ones.

Before your TV antenna stops working, there are a few ways to tell it’s starting to break. Some common signs that your antenna needs repair include:

  • A repetitive “no signal” issue

  • A redundant “searching” issue

  • Increased signal issues during a cloudy or rainy day

  • A sudden drop in signal strength, regardless of the weather

If you’re experiencing these problems, you’ll want to ensure that your cables are still in good shape and have not deteriorated. In addition, check to make sure that your cables are firmly in place at the wall outlet. Finally, check the position of your antenna to ensure there are no obstructions in its path. If you’ve checked your antenna thoroughly and are still having these problems, a repair is most likely needed by an antenna technician.

If you’re having problems with poor reception, here are some simple tips that may help improve the signal and picture quality.

  • Consider the position of the antenna: Could it be higher, is it secure, or are nearby obstructions interfering with the signal? For a directional antenna, you may need to reposition it in the direction of the broadcast tower.

  • Move any metallic objects: Metal can interfere or block reception, so if you have stainless steel objects or the antenna is near a wrought-iron fence, this could be a problem. Try to keep the antenna at least six feet away from metal objects..

  • Cable length: An overly long cable can reduce signal strength. If you don’t need as much cable as you are using, it may be better to exchange it for a shorter one.

The easiest way to ensure you get the best reception from your TV antenna is to leave the installation to a professional. You’ll pay around $300 for this service, but the expert will use signal checkers to find the ideal placement for your antenna on your roof. They can also determine the right direction for your antenna to face. If your existing antennas are delivering a poor-quality picture, it might help to invest in a TV antenna signal booster, which picks up more signals and could provide a better experience.
