"We requested some landscape work to be redone. Said in our original request back on April 23rd that we would like it done in the next 2 weeks. This person was to start on may 5th. We received a message saying he was not going to be able to start until May 12th. His attendance was spotty at best and very inconsistent. Working only between 4-6 hours when he did show up. Would work 2 hours be gone for 4 then back for an 1.5 hrs. Very inconsistent. This has gone on for the past 3 weeks. He contracted with us for 64 hours, at the rate we are going it will be the end of June before he finishes. We have tried talking with him a couple of different times regarding these issues, with no result. He left our garage door open when we left him working one Friday morning, told him we were heading out of town for a graduation, to just close the door when he was done working. My daughter drove by at noon and found our door open, he was nowhere to be found so she closed it. There was never any communication unless we were the ones to initiate it. Asked him several times for an agenda, as to when and for how long we could expect him on any given day. He rarely followed through on what he told us. It felt as if our job was not the priority. That he would fit us in here and there for an hour or two. The quality of his work was good, however, his communication, consistency, the lack of ability to get the job done in a timely fashion (the two week period that was requested in the initial request) his attitude, demeanor and disrespectful way he yelled at my husband and myself was atrocious!!!! Telling us we should of had it done in March, it was never done correctly in the first place, he even was cursing at us, because we told him he could work till he fulfilled his 64 hours. That we would be done at that point, even if the job was not completed. He told us he was doing a hell of a job for us and we didn't respect him. We had high hopes for this person and we were happy to give him the work. He just never really behaved as if he actually wanted the work. You get to a point where you just have to stop the bleeding and we were there with him."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

If you want to use the space beneath your second-story deck, then yes, an under-deck drainage system is worth it. Having a drainage system in place lets you run power to the area, so you can install a ceiling fan, lighting, TV, or other appliances to create a comfortable outdoor living space.

Costs depend on dock size, material type, damage severity, labor, and required permits.

While the chemical, copper-based coating on pressure-treated wood offers protection from rot and pests, it’s not a silver bullet. An added sealant will help protect the wood further, though sometimes the wood is treated in a way that causes premature failure, and this is largely out of your control. It’s simply a case of bad luck. Regularly inspect all your house’s wood to look for any cracks or signs of mold and mildew. Getting ahead of the problem is the key to ensuring it doesn’t grow out of control.

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.

Will pressure-treated wood rot? This wood could eventually suffer from rot, although it takes longer compared to untreated wood. Even though the chemicals applied to pressure-treated wood protect it, they eventually dissipate and leave the wood vulnerable. You can delay the appearance of rot in the treated wood by reducing its direct exposure to moisture and by painting it. Using fewer screws or nails in the wood—and thereby creating fewer holes in it—also delays the chances of rot forming.
