I'm pretty handy at most tasks, I went to the University of Nebraska for construction and business management. I have been doing this kind of work since the early 2000s, I have built multiple single-family homes from the ground up as well as a few commercial projects. I have had my hands in just about every aspect of the construction process. I am comfortable doing electrical, plumbing, drywall/sheetrock, carpet, framing, finishing, foundations, deck or patio, excavation, cabinets/ countertops, doors, brick, siding, concrete, and more.

After you successfully remove your boulder, you have a few options for what to do to get rid of it. You can rent a dumpster if your yard has many boulders or if you’re planning a larger project. You can even save the boulder and reuse it elsewhere on your property to save on landscaping costs. Excavation permits help protect the topography in your area and can avoid issues with poor drainage. In most cases, your excavation company will know whether or not permits are required and will even pull them and close them out for you before and after the job. You can also verify whether permits are necessary by calling your local building department and explaining the proposed project.

The digging depth will depend on the size of the trencher you use. Even smaller units can dig up to 4 feet deep, which is plenty for a DIY job. However, much larger trenchers can reach a depth of 18 feet and are better used by a team of pro contractors, not a single DIYer. As with all home improvement projects, use the right tool for the job and proceed with caution.
