"These guys are not professionals. The license they carry must of came out if a crackerjack box. They were recommended by my realtor because I was not familiar with any other inspection companies in the area. They performed a home inspection on the house I wanted to buy and did not find anything more then basic wear for a 12 yr old home. Using their "expert" knowledge of construction I assumed they knew what they were doing. I moved ahead and purchased the home and 2 weeks later I find the attic was full of mold, the roof had leaks, the roof was missing shingles and the vents were not installed properly. Then I found out that the bathroom tub had a crack that leaks into the floor below, the drains under sinks leaked, and that the home electrical service was not properly grounded. I called to ask why they missed everything and they didn't call me back. They did a ****** inspection that has ended up costing me $35,000. I know I can't be the only person in this town that this ****** *** company has failed."

Checking for mold yourself is crucial, as catching mold in the early stages is ideal. Mold can appear green, brown, black, blue, or yellow. It can smell musty and can feel like velvet, leather, or cotton.

Most often, mold grows near water damage. It’s best to inspect these places for signs of mold growth:

  • Basement: Look in corners, windows, carpet, closets, and around appliances.

  • Bathrooms: Check around sinks, ceilings, and around toilets.

  • Kitchen: Inspect around the sink, behind the refrigerator, and behind trash can.

  • Attic: Look near the insulation and near intake and exhaust vents.

Measure from zero on a measuring tape by placing the metal hook right up against the edge of what you need to measure. You can also latch the hook onto an open edge—of, say, a table—to accurately measure as well. If you begin at the 1-inch mark, you'll need to subtract an inch from your total.

You shouldn’t see a difference in your home’s value from your local property assessor if you have asbestos. Does asbestos affect home value when you are selling the home, though? If you are planning to sell the home, most jurisdictions require you to legally disclose the presence of asbestos to any buyer. Most buyers would have reservations about purchasing a home with asbestos, so they may offer less for the home. If you hire a pro to completely remove the asbestos, you do not have to disclose to buyers that the home once had asbestos.

While a hygrometer is the most accurate tool for measuring humidity levels in the home, you can gauge humidity levels using simpler methods. One way is by observing signs like condensation on windows or feeling excessively sticky or clammy indoors, indicating higher humidity. Another DIY approach involves the “hair method”—aka placing a few strands of human hair in a closed container with salt for several hours. If the hair becomes limp, it's likely due to high humidity. These methods offer rough estimations, but lack the precision of a hygrometer for accurate readings.

Garden windows can add value to your home and are an attractive feature for potential homebuyers. These windows add a custom look to your home and usable shelf space for homeowners with a green thumb. You’ll likely recoup your investment when it comes time to sell.
