There are a few key differences between custom and semi-custom cabinets. While custom cabinets offer complete customization, semi-custom cabinets are less personalized, offering fewer paint color, finish, and hardware choices. In addition, custom cabinets typically take longer to install due to the build time, whereas semi-custom cabinets are prefabricated and therefore faster to install. 

Standard kitchen cabinet drawers measure between 12 and 36 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and between 4 and 10 inches tall. Drawers are designed to fit with your cabinets, so a 36-inch-wide cabinet would have a 36-inch-wide drawer. The finished height of your cabinet should be 34 ½ inches to the top for a base cabinet, so if you have a 4-inch deep drawer, the cabinet below will be 30 ½ inches tall.

Most cabinets need two to three coats of paint, though the exact number depends on several factors. Use one or two coats of primer and one to three coats of paint. Thick, high-quality paint requires fewer coats, as does paint applied over existing paint that's in good condition. However, if painting a lighter color over an existing dark color, you'll need more coats.

It depends on your ceiling height. Wall cabinets are typically mounted 54 inches from the floor. So, if you have eight-foot ceilings, you’ll need 42-inch-high wall cabinets to fill the gap. And you’ll need 54-inch cabinets if you have nine-foot ceilings. But standard-sized cabinets don’t come in 54 inches, so you'll need to stack various sizes together. And, if you have ceilings higher than nine feet, it’s a good idea to have custom stacked cabinets made to fill your space.

The color you choose to paint your cabinets should reflect your personal style but can also match existing wall colors or appliances. Some colors to choose from include:
