Not wrapping a house before installing siding can lead to moisture intrusion, rot, mold, and even higher energy bills. However, it’s best to remove clapboard siding if you plan on replacing it with new siding. Burying wood clapboards underneath new siding can create risks of rot and mold, or hidden insect damage. It can also create warping issues over time. Removing clapboards allows you to properly install a new sheathing, as well as clean up the exterior wall and look for any signs of damage.

On average, siding lasts between 20 and 40 years. Most of the common materials used in siding—vinyl and wood siding—can last around 30 years if taken care of. Upscale options like stone, brick, and aluminum can last up to 100 years or more but will cost much more to purchase and aren’t as simple to install. 

While homeowners' insurance can include coverage for siding, general wear and tear of siding is not covered. If your siding is rotting—especially because you haven’t kept up with proper siding maintenance—replacement siding will likely not be covered by your homeowners' insurance policy. Instead, insurance generally covers siding repair or replacement if your siding has been damaged by extreme weather, vandalism, fire, or some kind of collision, like by a vehicle.
