"We have a home in Emerald Isle, and proximity to the ocean really takes a toll on windows and doors. During a Norâ easter earlier this year, we were awakened by a whistling sound emanating from our bedroom windows â and knew it was time to replace. I did the research, and reached out to Crystal Coast Exteriors â and had a long and informative conversation on all things window with Gloria, and arranged for an in-home consultation. A week or so later, I met with John and was impressed with his knowledge and experience, as well as his approach to window/door replacement. It did not take long to develop a plan and move forward â to replace 24 windows and a door. We elected to go with a combination of picture and double hung and a slider to replace a double door â all with â prairie gridsâ . Due to the impact of Covid to the supply chain, it took a bit longer than any of us expected to get the windows and door in, but as soon as they arrived Gloria called and confirmed an install date. Eric and his team arrived on time and got at it. I knew that it would be a challenging install â with â new constructionâ windows, on a 3-story home with Hardy plank exterior, with the 6 windows on the upper level that, by code, required very heavy â impact glassâ . But Eric and team got it done! The windows and door are BEAUTIFUL! They completely modernized our home â and the view to the ocean is fantastic. Gloria, John, Eric & his team are caring and competent professionals. I was able to observe the entire installation process, and I am confident that we will not have any issues anytime soon, and if we do, I am equally confident that one phone call to Gloria will get it resolved. I recommend Crystal Coast Exteriors to anyone who needs window and door replacement!"

Windows questions, answered by experts

Picture windows are still in style, even though they are one of the oldest types of windows. Other windows, like single- or double-hung windows and casement windows, have increased in popularity because they can open up for fresh air. However, homeowners still love the way a picture window can frame their lush outdoor garden or other pleasant neighborhood views.

Window capping costs between $1 and $2 per linear foot. Since your average window size is 24 by 36 inches, you’re looking at 10 linear feet in total, or $10 to $20 per window. Labor adds another $30 to $100 per hour to the project. If you have custom windows, you’ll spend more to have your windows capped. Fiberglass tends to cost more than vinyl and aluminum, while vinyl costs the least but has the shortest lifespan and may have a higher long term cost.

Mulled windows are no less efficient than individual windows, provided the wall opening is the same size. Larger wall openings filled with glass will always reduce overall energy efficiency, as glass transmits heat more readily than a solid wall. If the windows that are mulled together have the same square footage as individual windows, you might actually see a small decrease in your electric bills, as mulled windows let in more natural light that can reduce interior lighting costs.

Vinyl windows have a few cons to consider before installing. For instance, while vinyl windows are energy efficient in terms of maintaining your home’s temperature, the actual process of making vinyl windows involves chemicals that are harmful for the environment. Vinyl windows are also less customizable than some other types of windows.

In addition to protecting your home from costly storm damage, storm windows increase your home's value if you live in an area that’s prone to severe weather. Storm windows offer about an 80% return on investment (ROI). Therefore, if you install $10,000 worth of storm windows, you can expect to get around $8,000 back if you sell your home within a few years of installation. Additionally, highly hurricane-prone areas, like the Florida coast, offer even higher returns, with ROIs on storm windows reaching up to 86%.
