"Mike and his team from American Aquascape rebuilt our 4,500 gal Koi pond and turned it into a paradise with beautiful waterfalls, rocks, plants, and best of all we can see our 30+ Koi clearly through the water. Every aspect was handled with utmost attention to detail, from pump, filter, and pipe selection to rock and water plant placement, and with creativity and enthusiasm (for example, I would not have thought of installing in-pond lighting but was glad I accepted Mike's suggestion- it is beautiful at night to see the fish swimming around and exploring their world). The pond was previously set up by a DIFFERENT company, that in retrospect were "out of their depth" (pun intended!), underestimating the water flow and filtration needs of our pond and placing equipment in suboptimal places. This led to several years of dark green, opaque water where we could not see fish, despite constantly backwashing, changing filters, pond cleanouts, etc. In fact, the water was never clear from the very start. However, after American Aquascapes rebuilt our pond, correcting the mistakes made by the previous company, I realized that having clear water where the fish are happy and visible is a totally achievable goal-- a natural and logical outcome when your pond is set up correctly from the beginning. I would highly recommend hiring American Aquascapes if you want a Koi pond or water feature, or need help with your existing one. They are extremely knowledgeable and experienced and are the experts by far; there is really no comparison to anyone else in this area. Using their services will pay off down the road (as I learned the hard way)."

Pond water should be changed approximately once a week. When you change it, change around 10% to15% of the water. It’s important to monitor the quality of your pond water as this will determine if it needs to be changed more often, or if you should be changing more or less than 15% of it when you do so.

Even if you empty your pond before the winter, there’s a good chance it will refill naturally. It’s ideal in most cases, then, to leave water in your pond and winterize it instead. This method will prevent ice damage and protect wildlife. Plus, it’ll lessen the steps required to reopen your pond in the spring.

When deep cleaning your koi pond, transfer fish to a clean, uncontaminated container at least one foot deep, like a large bucket, tub, or kiddie pond. Fill the container with their existing pond water to avoid shocking them, and place the container in full or partial shade. When it’s time to reintroduce them into the pond, slowly add the new water to the container before adding the fish and container water back into the pond.

Every one to three months, you should perform regular fountain maintenance, including draining, cleaning, and rinsing the components of your fountain basin and the pump and tubing to prevent algae and other buildup. Fountain maintenance also includes keeping the appropriate water level and removing debris like leaves, insects, and twigs from the water to avoid clogging the pump. You can also hire a professional landscaper to clean your fountain for around $50 to $150 per month on average.

Backyard water features can add serenity to your property, drown out neighborhood noise, and serve as a focal point to a stunning landscape design. In some cases, a properly installed and maintained water feature can add to your home’s value. Just be sure to check with your insurance company before installation since some features may affect your premiums.
