"Sean at Rapt Homes came to my rescue after I purchased cabinets from Lowe’s and couldn’t find anyone that would set them to the floor and install them. Had I found him earlier I could have saved money by having him build my kitchen island. He did help me return some very expensive corbels to Lowe’s and even after paying them a restocking fee Sean saved me a lot of money by furnishing quality corbels at a much lower price and even found me a better price than Lowe’s on a granite countertop. Sean also re-designed the sloppy Lowe’s island layout to make my kitchen much more user friendly and efficient and dressed the island up with trim and a pullout trash and recycle bin not provided by Lowe’s and all at a better price. I also had him build cabinets for my laundry room and am very happy with the results, giving me much better storage options for laundry detergent and other laundry goods. Sean was professional, easy to work with and his cabinet skills are exceptional."

"Steve and Justin exceeded my expectations! Steve was very pleasant to work with and offered helpful suggestions as we discussed the details of the project. He listened carefully to what we wanted and improved on the design. He was matching the finish and molding of other cabinets we had and even had the molding custom made for us when he discovered it was not a readily available pattern. The cabinets are a wonderful match and fit the space well (another concern we had). The craftsmanship is precise and invokes pride... glad they are in the kitchen where they will be seen. The installation of the full wall, floor ceiling cabinets took about five hours and they cleaned up the small debris they had made. We were ready to use the cabinets as they waved goodbye! I do not believe we could have had a better experience. We wholeheartedly recommend Steve Brooks for his woodworking mastery and will be using him again for future projects."

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

It is typically cheaper to buy stock or semi-custom cabinets than to build custom ones. The price difference is significant:

  • Custom Cabinets: Cost between $500 and $1,200 per linear foot. This price is affected by materials, size, design complexity, and door styles. For instance, a simple slab door's materials might cost $60-$70, while a decorative mullioned glass door could be $100-$200.

  • Semi-Custom Cabinets: Cost between $150 and $700 per linear foot.

  • Stock Cabinets: Cost between $100 and $400 per linear foot.

While buying pre-built cabinets is more cost-effective, building custom cabinets allows for full modification to fit unique spaces, such as rooms with high ceilings or unusual layouts, which stock options cannot accommodate.

If you're looking for ways to save money on custom cabinets, there are a few ways to cut costs without sacrificing beauty. For starters, comparing door styles to choose the most cost-effective option is a great way to save money on the overall project.

In addition, choosing a common wood species versus an exotic one will lower the price. Woods like oak and hickory are often more affordable wood choices, and the same goes for knobs, pulls, and other finishes where picking a commonly available style can reduce costs.

Before making any big plans, climb up a step ladder and closely examine the top of your cabinets. You’ll get to see what sort of clean-up work needs to be done, but you can also check for any unexpected obstacles. Sometimes this space holds electrical boxes, wiring, or even plumbing components. Those will affect plans to install a new layer of cabinets or shelves.

If your cabinets don’t reach the ceiling, you can extend them higher, adding visual interest, privacy, and storage space to your kitchen. Depending on the height of your ceiling, you may want to extend the structure of the cabinets and install longer doors to make each individual cabinet taller, or you could add additional cabinets above the existing ones. Either option is cheaper and easier than installing entirely new cabinets.

Buying a kitchen cabinet or finding an experienced cabinet maker is likely going to be your best option unless you have the necessary experience and woodworking skills. If you’re just replacing one cabinet base or one cabinet, making your own is entirely possible and more effective, assuming you have the right equipment.
