"Tim was very professional, he was prompt in responding to messages. He showed up on the time for structural inspection and did thorough inspection. I highly recommend him considering my earlier experiences with other structural engineers, how they carry out their inspections and never give any definitive answers."

Small jobs welcome

Offers commercial services

I am a licensed Professional Engineer providing structural engineering services for residential and small commercial projects. I work with homeowners, contractors, and design professionals to help move projects through the permit process by providing structural calculations, drawings, evaluations, and engineering letters as needed.\n\nIn-person structural inspections are available in Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia. Remote structural consulting is available in Delaware and North Carolina.\n\nTypical projects include load-bearing wall removal, beam and header sizing, additions, decks, foundation concerns, and framing evaluations. My goal is to provide practical, code-compliant structural solutions that are clear, efficient, and tailored to the project.

"Outdoor Artisan is as professional as they come. What i look for more than anything else in a contractor is communication skills. If a contractor cannot excel at communication then clients are not going to be happy. Outdoor Artisan was in contact with us every day of this project, even when we were out of town. We knew what was happening, who was coming and going and what they hoped to achieve each week of the project. In addition to the owner, Clive Newey, we worked with Jason Humphrey, our project manager. Jason has a very artistic mind, and was always suggesting ideas to enhance and build upon what we happen to be thinking about at the time; the stain color, ways to finish the structure with elegant trim, the cupola on top and the corner braces. We highly recommend Outdoor Artisan for any outdoor structure, hardscape or landscape project."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Homeowners in Salisbury should anticipate longer permit review times, particularly for properties in historic districts where special approvals are often required. Local building codes address wind and seismic safety, so ensure your plans meet these standards. Due to the prevalence of expansive clay, soil testing is usually necessary. Material delivery can be delayed, so factor extra time into your project timeline.

Helpful?

Signs like diagonal cracks in brickwork, uneven floors, or doors that stick after Salisbury’s humid summers can signal foundation movement. If you notice new gaps around windows or persistent water in your crawl space, it’s wise to arrange a structural assessment. Homes built before 1970 in Salisbury should be checked every decade to address issues linked to local soil and weather patterns.

Helpful?

Schedule soil testing during Salisbury’s drier months for the most accurate results. Seek multiple quotes from contractors familiar with local soil conditions and historic properties. Submit permit applications early, as approvals can take longer in Salisbury. Coordinate with utility providers before work begins, and keep detailed records of all inspections and changes to your project to avoid delays or surprises.

Helpful?

In Salisbury, foundation systems are especially vulnerable due to the area’s expansive clay soils, which can shift dramatically with seasonal moisture changes. Roof trusses may need reinforcement after heavy ice storms, and aging floor joists in historic homes often require structural assessment. Retaining walls on sloped properties are also at risk, particularly after intense spring rainfall or when drainage around the property is inadequate.

Helpful?

Overwatering landscaping near your Salisbury home can worsen soil expansion, stressing the foundation. Letting mulch or soil pile up against exterior walls traps moisture, leading to hidden damage. Ignoring minor cracks or failing to control indoor humidity can allow small issues to escalate. Planting deep-rooted trees too close to the house often leads to root intrusion, especially in Salisbury’s clay-rich soil.
