"Mr. Castillo-Navia fulfilled all items in our wish list and designed a practical and beautiful home for our family! I hope this is our forever home but my wife and I would definitely look him up again if we need a different house when we eventually become empty nesters. He is professional and detail-oriented. CASNA Design even covered the structural engineering process. He answered immediately, is knowledgeable and passionate about his work, transparent in pricing, answered all of our questions and is very punctual. Mr. Castillo-Navia took the time to listen to what we wanted and made sure to incorporate that into our designs. We had the best experience. He was friendly, professional and we love the design he came up with. From the initial meeting to the final meeting everything went smoothly. He is very knowledgeable and a great listener. He also made himself available for follow-up questions from potential contractors and helped us compare bids. Working with CASNA Design was money well spent and we highly recommend him."

"Damon Howard inspected the foundation of home we were contracted to buy, he found structural errors and listed them on the report. Very thorough and clear report! Took time to explain issues and recommended companies for repairs and then returned to make sure the were fixed correctly."

"Tim was very professional, he was prompt in responding to messages. He showed up on the time for structural inspection and did thorough inspection. I highly recommend him considering my earlier experiences with other structural engineers, how they carry out their inspections and never give any definitive answers."

Small jobs welcome

Offers commercial services

I am a licensed Professional Engineer providing structural engineering services for residential and small commercial projects. I work with homeowners, contractors, and design professionals to help move projects through the permit process by providing structural calculations, drawings, evaluations, and engineering letters as needed.\n\nIn-person structural inspections are available in Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia. Remote structural consulting is available in Delaware and North Carolina.\n\nTypical projects include load-bearing wall removal, beam and header sizing, additions, decks, foundation concerns, and framing evaluations. My goal is to provide practical, code-compliant structural solutions that are clear, efficient, and tailored to the project.

"The founder of Outdoor Artisans (Clive) is a master craftsmen and stonemason. Moreover, Clive is a holistic visionary. He turned my rudimentary design into a concept that encompassed my home, yard, lifestyle and dreams of the future. I can say without exaggeration that Clive sees with the eye of an artist and paints a picture that represents a design that you probably didn't realize consciously but was what you really wanted all along. He offers you an environment that will reflect your persona in way you and your guests will entirely appreciate. Believe me - I tried to do all the work myself and about halfway through realized intuitively something was missing, but couldn't put my finger on it; that's when I invited Clive for an estimate. I am glad I did. After hearing his recommendations, I knew my concept was wrong. I hired him on the spot and tore out all the work I had done; that's how good his design was. The quality he brought to his installation is extraordinary; the lines are clear and fluid, different parts blend together and all of it embraces the larger environment it's been placed in."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Stone, marble, and brick are common building materials of Neoclassical architecture, though you will also find wood flooring and a range of natural stone tiles. Since several home styles fall under Neoclassical architects' umbrella, a range of building materials—including traditional wood framing—will make an appearance.

It's safe to assume that all exterior walls are load-bearing, or at least have load-bearing characteristics. Some older homes feature porches or bump-outs that don't rest on the home's foundation. However, they still must carry the weight of the roof section they support. Walls containing floor-to-ceiling glass or other non-structural elements must use post and beam configurations to meet load-bearing criteria.

The National Association of Home Builders requires repair of any foundation crack of more than one quarter of an inch, although local regulations may vary. In general, any visible crack that is growing in size, allowing water through, or that you have just noticed, is a good reason to call a structural engineer. Cracks can be a sign of a sinking foundation, so an inspection is a good idea for your peace of mind.

Precast concrete can be reinforced with rebar, wire mesh, or other materials to improve its strength and add stability. Precast concrete for large construction projects is often pre-stressed as well for greater structural strength. Reinforced concrete is durable and strong, making it an ideal choice for many construction projects.

Structural engineers specialize in all aspects of a building’s structural integrity, including the foundation. Foundation engineering is a critical part of structural engineering, so structural engineers are experts in foundation design. Many foundation repair companies either have a structural engineer on staff or one they work closely with, so be sure you look for that when deciding who to hire for foundation repair.
