"Stephen did an amazing job. We originally hired him to demo and rebuild a larger deck. After seeing his attention to detail, and learning his ability to do all sorts of projects we then hired him to paint the exterior, which led to him repairing our front porch and finally having him build custom cedar shutters. DECK: It is beautiful, huge, sturdy and was well under any quote received from other. contractors. EXTERIOR PAINT/TRIM: He did a great job repairing all the damaged/rotten wood trim. He was thorough when re-caulking the seams between the hardy planks. He was adamant about adequate coverage (we went from a light house to a dark house), even spending longer than the expected amount of time to ensure the paint was perfect. FRONT PORCH: This project was not originally one we were planning on, but as he started painting the porch he realized there was lots of rot. He completed this project for a very fair price and we knew we could trust his woodworking skills because of the deck. SHUTTERS: I had originally ordered new vinyl board and batten shutters online, but did not like how they looked. after expressing my frustration, he offered to make them custom for me with cedar. These shutters may very well be my favorite part! He did this work in the dead of summer, and not once called out, slacked, or let his work reflect how incredible hot and uncomfortable it was outside. Many of my neighbors have used him for various jobs since seeing the work he has done for us! HIRE HIM!!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Yes. Freestanding or floating decks are exactly what the name implies—structures with their own support beams. You can build a deck yourself and place it next to a house for the illusion of a connected deck without the hassle. Or you can construct it in a separate part of your yard for a dedicated outdoor entertainment space. For the purpose of removing a freestanding deck, the steps are the same as an attached deck, but you don’t have to cut the deck away from the home.

The most likely causes of a deck leaning to one side are damaged deck posts, soil erosion, and inadequate deck footings. If you’re not sure about the exact cause, the best option is to call a contractor who can build a deck to inspect the damage and recommend the best way forward.

Rotting wood, loose railings, or unstable stairs may indicate a need for expertise.

Choices include wood, composite, and hardwoods, each with unique benefits.
