"Getting a walk in tub is expensive no matter who you use. My experience thus far is with installation only and I must say my install went great. It has been over a month and no issues with my tub so I cannot comment on repair process with American Standard."

"Had both bathrooms remodeled by taking one piece shower and tub out and replacing with tile showers with glass doors. In one of the bathrooms, I also had the vanity and linoleum floor replaced with a new vanity with marble top, and laminate vinyl flooring. Billy did an excellent job on all of it and what I really like is that he only works on your project at one time so he doesn't leave you hanging two or three days while he goes off to work on someone else's job. I would hire him again."

"Kurt built a new deck for my family. He did a beautiful job, he pays attention to detail and even made a few changes I wanted to the gate. He’s courteous and he came when he said he would. I was very happy with his work and highly recommend him. Two thumbs up!!"

"Highly recommend Fayetteville Flooring. From start to finish, they were professional and easy to work with. Sherry was excellent setting everything up. Mr. Ellis and son did the install and we are more than pleased with the results. They'll be my first call with any future flooring needs."

Tub Shower Conversion questions, answered by experts

The cost of making a bathroom accessible can be $3,000 to $25,000, but you could spend as much as $50,000 building a brand-new ADA-compliant bathroom. Some bathroom accessibility upgrades to consider include:

  • Installing grab bars: $100–$500

  • Lowering cabinets and vanities: $1,200–$2,500

  • Installing modified doors: $700–$1,500

  • Installing a modified toilet: $400–$1,000

  • Installing an accessible sink and faucet: $100–$1,000

  • Adding a walk-in tub: $1,100–$17,000

  • Converting a bathtub into a walk-in tub: $350–$1,000

  • Installing a wheelchair-accessible shower: $2,000–$7,500

  • Installing a shower ramp: $16–$300

In most cases, you can remove your showerhead without turning off your main water supply. You just need to make sure your shower isn’t on before you screw off the showerhead. That said, you may experience a small trickle of leftover water in the pipe.

If you have an older showerhead, it may be a good idea to turn off the main water supply because this job can put pressure on the pipes. If you have a shower shut-off valve, it will be hidden somewhere in a nearby access panel.

When choosing between fiberglass and acrylic for a shower, your budget and preferences are key factors. Fiberglass is generally more affordable and lightweight, but it may be more prone to scratches, dullness, and cracking over time. Acrylic is more durable, flexible, and scratch-resistant, and it tends to retain its shine longer. While slightly more expensive, acrylic is available in a wider variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and finishes. It is also generally easier to repair if damaged. For shower bases specifically, acrylic is less likely to crack than fiberglass, but as long as either type is installed and supported correctly, it should not chip or crack prematurely.

The most cost-effective method of building a shower involves using a prefabricated shower kit, which can be found at most home improvement stores. These kits include preformed shower bases, wall panels, and doors, reducing labor and material costs. You’ll most likely need to hire a local shower installer to make sure it’s installed properly, but it will be less expensive than designing and installing a custom shower.

Whether converting a tub to a shower is worth it depends on your personal circumstances and priorities. For many, a shower is a safer option that reduces the risk of slip-and-fall accidents, making it a valuable upgrade. It can also be a worthwhile conversion if a shower is more practical for your lifestyle and you rarely use the tub. However, there are potential downsides to consider. The cost, which can range from $1,200 to $8,000, can be a deterrent. Additionally, if you have young children, a bathtub is often easier for bathing them. Finally, removing the only bathtub in a home can potentially lower its resale value in the eyes of some buyers.
