"I bought this deal of 149 for 6 hour rotten repair and Jeff contacted me as soon as I bought it. He came in time the next day and did whole estimate for the jobs (1200+this deal). He wrote a proposal about the jobs, which made me think he was professional. He told me this would cost 2.5 days to finish and he would come here at the first day to guide his workers where need to repair, and charge me additional 1200 dollars so I originally thought this was reasonable.
However, on the day of service, he didn't show up. Only his workers came in and asked me about where need to repair. At that time I began to confuse since I am not a good memory person as well as not a contractor, how can I remember all the details about the jobs. So I have to use my previous inspection report as a guide for them. OH EXCUSE ME!!! I really don't know how  other contractors do this work but this makes me feel really bad. I have to stay at home all days to be a contractor.
Then, the workers checked the parts I showed them and told me some rotten wood cannot be replaced and can only be repaired with some material, which was stated 'REPLACE' in Jeff's proposal. This would make labor time much shorter, so I called Jeff about this as well as if he would come that day. At first Jeff said he would come at some time, but then since the labor time is shorter, I want to argue the total cost he proposed. He became really RUDE and SHUT DOWN PHONE directly. And these two days, he never showed up again or call. This is the first time I met such rude response.
On the other hands, the two workers are really professional and do the jobs in a good quality.
In the end, the total working time is 9.5 hours plus 3 hours material purchase time. Only half of Jeff's proposed time.
I am not a emotional person so I would not give all F rating for him. His workers are good and arrive in time everyday, however, this company owner is really really NOT PROFESSIONAL.
Before I bought this deal, I found previous rating are not good for this company but I didn't trust that since reviews might be from their competitors' attack. Now I understand I should trust reviews and ratings.

We recently purchased a 2nd home on Lake James with an exterior that is 100% cedar.  The exterior was in serious need of cleaning and re-staining.  It had not been maintained; and, had a significant amount of mold staining and several areas of the trim had the original finish peeling off.

We contracted with Mike and Crystal to prep and re-stain the exterior of our home.  Throughout the process, Mike demonstrated thoroughness, competency and responsibility.  Mike and Crystal took personal responsibility to ensure they delivered a quality product.  Mike kept his commitments and did not compromise his work product even when faced with the stripping process taking more time than he expected.  He completed the project per the schedule he committed.

Mike demonstrated a high attention to detail in the finishing process and ensured the project was completed to my satisfaction.  The home looks beautiful...we could not be happier.

I solicited bids from several paint contractors and evaluated several before selecting Mike.  His pricing was very competitive versus several other contractors; but, I never observed where Mike cut corners.

I would definitely recommend MIke's Painting and will plan to use Mike again when we have painting needs.

"We had such a small shower that we would bump the sides just trying to lean over to wash our feet and we hardly ever took baths in our family.  So, the decision was made to have them torn out and have a new larger shower installed that we would be comfortable with and truly enjoy while we lived here.
We began our Re-Bath experience at a Raleigh Home Show and we had our appointment set about a week later.  The gentleman came to our house and took measurements and sat with us to discuss exactly what we wanted the shower to look like.  He went over all the options and choices and discussed financing options as well.
Ultimately, when they came to do the work, they were clean and professional.  The guys were friendly and humorous and made us feel comfortable during the whole process.  They kept the mess to a minimum and cleaned up after themselves every day during the 3 day process.  Afterwards, we had a brand new shower installed and we could not be much happier with our new bathroom.  The price may be a little higher than some contractors out there, but they stand behind their work and they have a good reputation to protect.

"We unfortunately experienced a number of problems and communications issues throughout the process with Granite Transformations, and as a result the job experienced several delays.  It seemed like a situation where if something could go wrong, it did in more cases than not.   However in the end, it means a lot that the owners of GT recognized the issues, stood behind their business, and worked hard to earn our satisfaction. GT requests payments at time of signing the contract, and then at points during the process (e.g. cabinets installed, templates drawn, etc).  All who we spoke with at GT on the phone and those who performed work in our home were professional. The end result is a quality product, but the journey to get there was not expected.
Here is a chronology of events:
- Fri August 16th: a GT salesman came to our home with vanity cabinet and surface samples, outlined how the process worked, and we signed a contract to replace Master Bath Vanity Cabinet and Double-sink Top, and reface Half Bath Vanity Cabinet front as well as replace its Single-sink Top. Three new faucets were also included. GT to handle all plumbing hookups.  GT gave us access to an electrical contractor. The saleman explained that work would not begin until all materials were ready to go. At that point GT would install the new Master Bath cabinet, reface the Half Bath cabinet front, and do a template for both tops.  2-3 days after that, the tops and sinks would be installed, then the faucets hooked up.
- Fri October 4th: GT had called end of Sept to let us know all materials were in.  Upon the installers arriving at our house, GT let us know there was a mixup and the Master Bath cabinet had not yet come in.  So GT refaced the Half Bath cabinet.  However upon completion it was resurfaced in a White color rather than the Cherry color we had selected.
- Mon October 21st: GT removed the existing Master Bath cabinet, capped the plumbing, and installed the new cabinet. The Half-bath cabinet was refaced with the correct Cherry color.  Templates were drawn up to make the tops.
- Fri October 25th: GT was to install the Vanity Tops in both baths, however called the evening of Thurs Oct 24th to inform us that workers had dropped and broke the Master Bath top so it would need to be remade.  The composite used for the top was out of stock locally, so would have to be ordered.  With the Master Bath vanity out of commission since the plumbing was capped, we decided to leave the half-bath as is and have GT install the top in the half-bath when the Master Bath top was ready.
- Mon October 28th: The Electrical contractor completed the electrical work scheduled for the Master Bath.  His work was excellent, and price was very reasonable.
- Fri November 8th:  GT installed the Master Bath Vanity Top, Sinks, and Faucets.  This was about Three Weeks after GT had installed the new cabinet there and capped the plumbing.  GT installed the Half Bath Vanity Top, Sink, and Faucet. GT requested full remaining payment at this point, however since both of us were not available to inspect the work, we asked to pay the next day at their store which GT said was acceptable.
- Sat November 9th:  Upon waking up, we were greeted with water on the Master Bath floor, leaking from one of the sinks. Also, upon comparing both Master and Half Bath vanity tops to the samples we had in our possession, we discovered neither top matched its respective sample.  We had travel plans for the weekend, however due to the leak one of us stayed home. we called the plumber (Mr Water Heater, who we found out is owned by the local GT company) and learned they only work Mon-Fri 8-5ish and do not have emergency service.  Upon calling the GT store after it opened, I was told I may need to wait until Monday to have the plumbing issue looked at.  Given the various issues experienced, and the new leak, I asked to have the GT owner call me to discuss the issues.  Jonathan Lamb, GT co-owner called me, and as a result agreed to have a plumber resolve the leak over the weekend (which was done), and then work with us the following week on the other issues.
- Fri November 15th:  Mel Lamb, GT co-owner, came out to our house to inspect the sink top matches to the samples, and the overall experience we had.  He agreed they did not match what we were shown when we signed the contract. We decided to leave the Master Bath alone at this point since the colors worked fine, but Mel offered to replace the Vanity top in the Half Bath at no cost to us, and we accepted as the combination in there did not look right.  We also discussed the other issues.  Mel was not aware of the leak in the Master Bath the previous Saturday, but reassured us that he was aware things on this project did not go right, and that he was there to make things right. Mel made a trip back to the store to get new samples, and we selected from those for the new half bath top. He also offered a final discount on our remaining payment.
- Mon November 25th: Half bath top and sink were reinstalled, and faucet hooked up.  Final payment made in full.
So in summary, the jobs were completed about 15 weeks after the contract was signed, and about 7 weeks after work was started. During the course of our work, we dealt with about a dozen different people including office staff, installers, plumbers, salesman, co-owners, etc. and generally had to bridge communications among them... in our view it would have helped had a single project focal point been assigned.  We were surprised that after signing the contract with our salesman, that we never heard from him again during the project or as part of completing the project.  We also experienced that on several occasions work was not completed correctly on the first attempt which led to reschedules, delays, canceled plans, adhock needs, etc which was inefficient to both GT and the customer.  The local GT seems to be growing, and perhaps these are growing pains as a result of expanding their business.  Hopefully our experience will help bring some changes to the GT process and communications that will help other customers, and help us, should we do business again with GT further down the road.

"Last year I had a tankless gas water heater installed and the vent through the roof had developed a leak.  The $49 advertized price was said to include sealing of roof vents yet when the contractor came out he quoted an additional $100 price to reseal one vent.  I questioned him on what was included in the advertized price and he claimed this sealing was not.  I reluctantly agreed based on the fact that it would cost at least $100 to have another contractor come out and do the job.

UPDATE: At the Contractor's request and to make sure I had said nothing wrong I re-reviewed the coupon.  It says

Here's the Deal:
    - $49 for inspection of your roof by a roofing specialist and a $100 repair credit
    - Minor roof repairs that can cause water infiltration
    - Caulking exposed nail heads on flashing
    - Maintenance of RESEALING AROUND ANY UNSEALED PIPE COLLARS, EXHAUST FANS/VENTS AND CHIMNEY FLASHING - UP TO FOUR PENETRATIONS
    - Photos taken of any additional areas in need of maintenance and a plan of action presented

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

Bow windows need support because they are large and extend out from the exterior wall of the home. Bow windows may extend 1 foot to several feet from the outside of the home, so you’ll need to provide additional support to handle this weight. A window contractor will be able to provide the proper amount of support for your new bow window.

Professionals ensure precise alignment and durability, critical for structural integrity.

A few signs that you need a new door frame include:

  • The door no longer fits properly in its frame and sticks or scrapes.

  • You notice cracks, holes, or rotting.

  • You feel a draft coming from around the door when it’s closed.

  • You find yourself frequently needing to make repairs.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.
