The average lifespan of an asphalt driveway ranges from 15 to 30 years, while concrete driveways last between 20 and 30 years, depending on several factors. Extreme temperature changes, cold weather, poor maintenance, and heavy traffic can all shorten the lifespan of your driveway. The most common alternatives to a gravel driveway are concrete, asphalt, brick, and permeable pavers. Concrete and asphalt are the two more affordable alternatives, while the intricate design options of brick and permeable pavers make installation significantly more expensive. Similar to gravel, concrete isn’t the best driveway material for cold weather, as frigid temperatures can cause it to crack. Alternatively, asphalt is sensitive to heat, and driveways can become soft in areas with high temperatures and sun exposure. While brick and permeable pavers give homeowners curb appeal, the latter offers the added functionality of preventing flooding and reducing runoff water.

Decomposed granite and caliche can both harden into a solid surface using a plate compactor. However, due to decomposed granite’s fine particles, it’s not suitable for driveway surfaces. Some homeowners use pea gravel mixed with a gravel-binding resin to bind the loose stones and create a solid surface that won’t shift like loose gravel.

Asphalt, which is stone mixed with tar, is the most common material for outdoor basketball courts because it’s so sturdy and versatile. However, you don't have to use it: another option is polymeric rubber, which has shock pads that can prevent injury. This option is a little more expensive, ranging between $16 and $25 per square foot.

Materials used for indoor basketball courts, such as hardwoods, aren’t really an option outdoors.

An example of permeable paving is a set of cinder blocks or natural stone pavers with room inside for natural materials, such as gravel, sand, or grass. You can also design these pavers with brick or plastic tiles.

In addition to these pavers, permeable pavement can be obtained by using a highly porous material, such as pervious concrete or pervious asphalt.
