"Omar, Zack Yon, and Daniel Jones did a fantastic job on my crawl space repair. They were punctual, communicative, and thorough in their work. Daniel made sure to walk me through everything, show me things to be aware of in the new system. They all did amazing work and I am so pleased. Tar Heel did an excellent job from the inspection and quote to the finished work and labor. The work was completed to the highest standard. I cannot recommend their services and expertise enough."

"Haynes insulation encapsulated our crawl space last week. They did an outstanding job! Timely, considerate and quality materials and workmanship. Crawl spaces are difficult areas to work in. I am so relieved that our house has clean and healthy air, now!I would recommend everyone to protect their home, save on energy bills and breathe nice, clean air. Rita Kinney"

I am a licensed Professional Engineer providing structural engineering services for residential and small commercial projects. I work with homeowners, contractors, and design professionals to help move projects through the permit process by providing structural calculations, drawings, evaluations, and engineering letters as needed.\n\nIn-person structural inspections are available in Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia. Remote structural consulting is available in Delaware and North Carolina.\n\nTypical projects include load-bearing wall removal, beam and header sizing, additions, decks, foundation concerns, and framing evaluations. My goal is to provide practical, code-compliant structural solutions that are clear, efficient, and tailored to the project.

Home Inspection questions, answered by experts

Start by finding the septic tank, marked by an access lid near your home. From there, the drain field extends outward in a series of trenches. Look for greener, lusher grass, as drain fields promote plant growth due to moisture and fertilizer. You can also check property records, use a soil probe to detect damp soil, or hire a septic professional with ground-penetrating radar equipment to map the drain field’s location.

It’s a good idea to conduct a DIY attic inspection at least once a year to look for signs of water damage, pest infestation, and damage to the underside of the roof decking. If you suspect any problems, call in a professional to confirm and come up with a solution. You should also hire a pro to inspect an attic before purchasing a home, and you can have an inspection done as a seller to entice buyers to move forward with an offer or purchase.

Without regular proactive maintenance, your home and the things in it will wear out, break, or otherwise deteriorate much faster than they would with routine maintenance. Regular home maintenance also helps to prevent major problems down the road. For example, regular gutter cleaning will help avoid roof and foundation problems caused by pooling water and improper drainage.

Technically, you can do a home inspection yourself. Still, it is not recommended unless you or someone you know has a background in the construction trades to be able to identify any issues. A certified home inspector is trained and has the experience necessary to make a thorough and trustworthy assessment of the condition of a home. If you need a home inspection when buying and selling a home, a professional home inspector is often required.

Homes should be checked for mold annually, especially if you live in an area with high humidity or frequent rainfall. Inspections are crucial following flooding, roof leaks, or plumbing issues. More frequent checks are necessary if your home has a history of mold problems or water damage. Regular inspections help detect mold early, preventing costly remediation and minimizing health risks, especially in moisture-prone areas such as basements and bathrooms.
