"We had a Maynor tech (Gary) inspect our dual zone system yesterday and all went well. We called Maynor based on the multitude of positive reviews found on line. Our HVAC system had not had an inspection in 6 years and we knew we were overdue. Gary was very professional in his approach and very willing to explain what he was doing step by step. He found indications of mold on the coils and recommended the installation of UV fixtures to alleviate further problems. There was no pressure and instead shared photos off of his phone showing similar situations and the affect of the UV lights. Gary was able to provide and install the fixtures while he did the system inspection. We were very pleased with the manner in which this young man conducted himself and his working knowledge of the HVAC units. We're happy that we selected Maynor and look forward to a long relationship with them."

"We got lucky with a quick turnaround from Sean on replacing our HVAC since it failed in the first cold snap last fall. Everything was more expensive because of where we are in the pandemic and supply chain issues, but he was knowledgeable and helpful in finding the best possible value within that. Only negative of the whole process was that we hadn’t discussed form of payment ahead of time (and realized when the time came that we had misplaced the checkbook in a recent move), so were caught by some additional processing fees when we had to use a card."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

A new HVAC system combines components to control indoor temperature and air quality. Features include a furnace or heat pump and an air conditioner or evaporator coil, depending on the climate requirements. It also involves a network of ductwork for air distribution, a thermostat for temperature regulation, and electrical connections. Air purifiers or humidifiers can be integrated to improve indoor air quality.

It depends on the type of AC unit and the extent of the mold growth. For example, if you have a small amount of mold in your central air conditioner, it’s worth cleaning it to protect your HVAC system and your health. In situations like these, you can often remove the mold yourself in a couple of hours. On the other hand, if you have a portable AC unit with a severe mold problem, it makes more sense to buy a new one. On average, replacing a portable AC unit costs $100 to $500.

As a general rule, you should have your HVAC system professionally serviced at least once a year, though it's best to follow the manufacturer's specific recommendations. Many experts suggest twice-yearly maintenance: once in the spring for the cooling system and once in the fall for the heating system. This is especially recommended for older units, systems with recurring issues, or heat pumps that provide both heating and cooling. Regular service, which can cost between $100 and $550, keeps the system running efficiently, helps prevent costly future repairs, and saves money on utility bills.

An undersized whole-house generator has the potential to overheat and shut down when you try to run a central AC system. This scenario can not only damage the whole-house generator, but can also trip your home’s breakers or cause electrical damage. To avoid this situation, hire a local generator installer to correctly size your whole-house generator.

The cost to add Freon to an AC ranges from $100 to $350. It can increase up to $600 for large AC units requiring much more coolant. The cost also depends on how much refrigerant your unit needs. If only a small amount of Freon leaked out, your cost would be on the lower side. A complete replacement of all the required refrigerant can get expensive.
