"Tammy and David are wonderful, kind people who are expert in what they do! I met them at a time when I needed a kitchen remodel. My new refrigerator was lonely and needed cabinets around it. I explained what I wanted and, most important to me, they listened! I also had a cabinet that enclosed the old frig...I wanted that one to house my microwave on the upper portion with slide out shelves on the lower. As a matter of fact, I wanted sliding shelves around the new frig too. Later that evening, Tammy sent a computer graphic of the final product after I asked for a change in design...I approved it and they were on their way! Tammy and David had the necessary information and promised two weeks for installation to occur. Exactly two weeks from our first meeting, they began the installation; a day later, it was completed! The cabinets are absolutely beautiful, a testament to their expertise! I am beyond ecstatic every time I see them! Additionally, I should mention that my home is old with floors that do not always demonstrate the word level! They compensated for that in their design; in fact, there was still a slight problem with the refrigerator after the install...it was leaning backwards. I texted them about it. They came over, after some very busy hours of working on another project, to make sure the frig was level. When David said that they weren't leaving until this problem was solved, I knew I had chosen the best people. The problem was corrected and I couldn't be happier. Besides being incredible carpenters, they are good, caring people! They make a great team...I wholeheartedly recommend them! Thank you Tammy and David!"

"The room addition went great. Mr Porter was very efficient. Kept me up to date in all aspects of the build. He pays attention to detail. His pricing was very fair. I have used this company multiple times. In 2009 ,he completed a kitchen remodel for me. I would recommend him to anyone needing a project done."

"Great honest contractors. They did my bathrooms, hot water heater, unclogged my house drain and they did a French drain so my basement is not wet anymore. I already hired them to do my whole roof in the spring. I will hire them anytime."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.
