You can avoid brush marks when painting your front door by painting the door off the hinges and then going over the door with a dry roller after using a paintbrush to smooth out any rough edges. You also want to avoid overloading your paintbrush with paint, as this can create an oversaturated surface where wet paint has nowhere to go.

While we can’t stop you, we don’t recommend using ceiling paint on walls. Ceiling paint is designed to be flat and less durable, which means it won’t stand up well to scrubbing or regular contact. While it’s impossible to give an exact number, don’t be surprised if you need to repaint walls with flat paint every few years.

The color of your paint shouldn’t make it harder to apply, but it can be harder to cover in one coat, depending on the surface. Using a good quality primer that’s tinted gray will help make applying your black paint easier. Even with a primer, you will likely have to use two coats to get a perfect, solid black finish.

You should use either a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio of paint to paint thinner in most cases. The amount of paint should always be higher than the amount of paint thinner.
