In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.

It can be dangerous to remove icicles from your roof, so the best option is to treat the underlying issue instead, usually by ensuring proper insulation in your home. If you’re concerned about immediate damage, you can hire a professional to remove the icicles and the snow accumulation on your home to prevent the issue from recurring. Just make sure you use a long-term solution, too, like addressing insulation problems or installing roof heating coils on your roof.

A heated gutter system can help prevent ice formation and save you money in water damage from leaks and other repairs. The cost to install heated gutters runs between $500 and $1,300, depending on your home’s size. Heated gutters are worth it if you live in areas with harsh winters with a lot of snow and ice, and you also have several tall trees near your home that drop a lot of debris. 

Unless you've chosen to install underground downspouts, your gutter downspouts shouldn't touch the ground. If they come into contact with the soil or pavement next to your home, rainwater can back up into them during a storm, preventing them from doing their job effectively.
