"Extremely satisfied with the exterior repairs Velasquez Roofing LLC completed on my home. They replaced my rotting fascia boards and repaired the foyer entrance using Hardie board, and the final result looks spectacular. The crew was professional, knowledgeable, and meticulous about cleaning up every day. They handled a tricky, tedious job with skill and were very transparent about the process, cost, and were extremely helpful with suggestions of material. The new siding in the front door area blends in perfectly with the surrounding brick. I highly recommend them for quality work!"

"Josh did a wonderful job removing algae stains from about a third of my roof. Although barely five-years-old, the asphalt shingles in that area of the roof (not much sun) were badly stained--and getting them replaced is a big hassle. Josh answered my initial request very promptly and quickly sent a written quote after listening to my concerns and seeing the photos of the stained shingles. He arrived on the scheduled day and did a fantastic job: he took great care with the shingles, and the roof looks like new. He is very polite and professional--and EXTREMELY knowledgeable about his work. I will be contacting him with any future power-washing work I need done in the future."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Rubber shingles last for around 30 years, on average, and some can last for and include warranties for up to 50 years. Rubber roof shingles are more expensive than asphalt shingles, but they can last up to twice as long, meaning they provide more value in the long run. Just keep in mind that rubber roofs often require more maintenance than asphalt shingle roofs, including routine cleaning to avoid mold growth. Ask the roofer who installed your roof for an estimate for routine cleaning, if necessary.

The placement of snow guards depends on the individual roof, but typically snow guards are placed between 12 and 18 inches from the eaves, though they can be placed as close as six inches and as far as 24 inches from the eaves. A roofing professional can assess the roof and potential snow loads to determine the best placement.

Complete house winterization goes above and beyond the list we created above. In addition to everything listed, full house winterization also includes:

  • Performing a home energy audit.

  • Preparing your deck and patio for winter.

  • Learning how to start a snowblower.

  • Replacing smoke detector batteries.

  • Installing outlet gaskets.

  • Installing storm doors.

Yes, an underlayment is required for metal roofs, especially when installed over an indoor residential living space. This underlayment acts as a protective barrier between the metal roofing and the roof deck. Common materials include tar, asphalt felt, or woven synthetic polymers. Depending on local building codes, existing shingles in good condition may also suffice. A quality underlayment is crucial as it provides protection against water intrusion, improves energy efficiency through insulation, helps absorb sound, and ultimately extends the lifespan of your roof.

The most common slope range for roofs on houses in snowy areas is between 4/12 and 6/12, or 50%. A roof with a slope of less than 10%, or roughly a 2/12 pitch, won’t be effective at shedding snow. However, roofs that are too steep can allow large amounts of snow to build up and fall all at once, creating a hazard for those on the ground.
