"We had Groundworks come out for 3 different issues. As much as we didn't want to see them ;-) we were so happy to see much of the same crew! Ryan, the foreman, Alex, Nate and Nick are the epitome of professionalism! They went above and beyond what we expected of them. They arrived when they said they would and worked faster than expected! If we ever have to have foundation work again, we would definitely call Groundworks and would be lucky to have Ryan and his crew!!"

"They came to my residence and provided a cost and time estimate in a friendly neighborly manner. They stayed in touch to confirm our scheduled work date and time. They were punctual and thorough in explaining how the work would be done and listened when I commented on the locations of sprinklers and best approaches as to keep our lawn from unsightly track marks. The work was completed professionally as per our agreement. I would highly recommend them, and will use them for future landscaping work."

"Hired them and they started the job the next day since they already had the equipment here, which saved me a lot of money. The job was done by the 2nd day which would have taken me weeks to do! Craig was very professional and continued to check in with me, throughout those 2 days to make sure they were doing exactly what I wanted. Thank u to Craig and his team! I look forward to calling him soon for the next projects!!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Chimneys require frequent masonry work due to heavy wood-stove use and intense freeze-thaw cycling during harsh Hamilton winters. Foundation walls face immense hydrostatic pressure from spring snowmelt, leading to cracking and efflorescence. Retaining walls on sloped properties experience frost heave and soil saturation. Finally, exterior brick steps and walkways suffer surface spalling and joint cracking from the region's rapid temperature drops.

Helpful?

After completing masonry work, apply a breathable sealant to protect against wet Hamilton springs and winter moisture. Monitor fresh mortar closely during the first freeze-thaw cycle to ensure proper curing. Direct grading and drainage away from repaired foundations to manage heavy MT spring snowmelt. Finally, schedule a flue lining inspection for repaired chimneys and close out any structural permits with the local building department.

Helpful?

Inspect your property every spring for spalling brick, crumbling mortar joints, or white moisture stains on foundation blocks. Schedule masonry work immediately if you spot horizontal cracks in basement walls or leaning retaining walls after the MT snowmelt. For chimneys, book an inspection if you notice cracked crowns, interior ceiling water stains, or if the structure experienced a recent seismic event.

Helpful?

Schedule masonry work between late May and early September. Mortar requires consistent ambient temperatures above 40 degrees Fahrenheit to cure properly. The dry summer months in Hamilton provide ideal, stable conditions. Winter projects demand extensive heated enclosures to prevent fresh mortar from freezing. Because homeowners discover winter damage in April and May, book a local professional early to beat the spring rush.

Helpful?

Your home's location on sloped lots near the Bitterroot Range foothills requires extra scaffolding for masonry work. Historic Hamilton properties feature softer lime mortar or irregular river rock basements, demanding specialized matching materials. Additionally, clay-heavy soils near floodplains cause foundation shifting. Since Western MT is seismically active, older unreinforced chimneys or foundations need a structural assessment before starting any repairs or additions to ensure safety.
