"The electrician from Hometown Electric was courteous, proficient and efficient as he completed the installation our newly purchased ceiling fan. He was here for an hour or so and was willing to do other job(s) to fulfill the minimum service agreement of 2 hours. Per my request, he looked at our dining room light fixture, but said there was nothing wrong with how I reinstalled the glass globe after replacing the light bulb. Thank you Angi for the referral. I would definitely call them if I had any other electrical concerns or projects. Stuart F. Julian LuAnn Julian"

"They immediately reached out when I set up the request. When I called back, they were able to have a tech here within the hour. They were quick, efficient, clearly qualified, courteous, friendly, did more than I expected (including drilling a couple of holes so I didn't have wires showing) and then stayed to show me how to work the tv. I highly recommend this company."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), GFCI outlets should be installed in wet or damp locations where they might be splashed with water or other liquids. This is to protect against ground faults, which are more common around water. Specific areas that require GFCI outlets include kitchens (especially near counters), bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, garages, and all outdoor receptacles. Depending on local electrical codes, you may need at least one GFCI outlet in these rooms, or every outlet in the area may need to be GFCI protected.

A bigger breaker alone probably won’t fix your problem of frequent tripping. But if you upgrade an electrical circuit to a higher amp rating, or upgrade your breaker box to handle more amps, it could solve your tripping problems. Consult a qualified electrician about the best course of action.

Yes, wires are still hot, even if the light switch is off. The only way to ensure the wire is no longer live and that you can work with it safely is to open your circuit breaker, locate the breaker for the outlet you’re working with, and turn off the breaker for that outlet.

You can check if an electrician is licensed in New York by using the online license verification search tool offered by the New York State Education Department. The database is updated daily and gives you the option of searching by license number, contractor name, or the name of the business.

It depends on where you live. Some cities may require a permit for electrical work, while others don’t. You’ll need to call your city’s building department to determine if you’ll need to apply for a permit or not. If a permit is required, you’ll likely have to pay a fee for it.
