Dry-rot, Water or Pest Damage - Major Repair

"AHS is ok. They cover repairs of most everything under the roof of your house. The companies that contract with them are not always the best. You call AHS with the issue, they send a fax to the repair company and give you the contact info. If they don't contact you within 24 hours, you call them. Sometimes they answer, sometimes they don't. When they arrive (usually three days or so later), they service the item. if it has issues within the 90 days, you call AHS again, they are sent out with no charge. If the serviceman decides the unit is unrepairable, AHS will allow you to choose a replacement from their listing (usually not as good as what you have) they will install and remove your old item, or give you wholesale amount to buy and install your own. Prices vary on what you want covered and what you want the copay to be, plus where you live. For me it is 49.99 per month with a 75.00 time of service order. You can have more than one item serviced at the same time under the same fee. If you have a SEAR product the repair guys are great. Not that wild about the other ones they send out. But it is a big savings compared to calling someone on your own. The cost of service is only the 75.00 copay."

Mold Testing and Remediation questions, answered by experts

There are two types of mold symptoms in the home: visible mold and unexplained health issues. If you have allergies out-of-season, brain fog with no other obvious cause, constant congestion, and other such symptoms, you may have a mold problem. Oftentimes you can smell mold in your home, even if you can’t see it.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), hazardous waste is generally classified into four main categories:

1. Characteristic Wastes: These exhibit at least one of four hazardous traits: ignitability (flammable, like gasoline), corrosivity (can rust or decompose materials, like car batteries), reactivity (unstable and can explode, like aerosol cans), or toxicity (harmful when ingested, like lead-based paint).

2. Listed Wastes: These are specific wastes from manufacturing and industrial processes that the EPA has officially designated as hazardous. They include byproducts from processes that use solvents, pesticides, and other chemicals.

3. Universal Wastes: These are commonly generated hazardous items that are subject to streamlined regulations. Examples include batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing equipment (e.g., bulbs), and some lamps.

4. Mixed Wastes: This category includes waste that contains both hazardous and radioactive components, making it subject to regulation by both the EPA and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Neglecting mold growth on wood can result in various issues that deteriorate its appearance and jeopardize its structural stability. The mold's ability to multiply and expand can disintegrate the fibers of the wood, weakening it further. In addition, the allergenic spores and mycotoxins released by mold can pose health hazards through inhalation or contact. Ignoring the mold's presence allows it to thrive, increasing the likelihood of spreading to other surfaces and requiring extensive and expensive measures to control in the future. Addressing mold on wood promptly is crucial to preserving its condition and safeguarding the health of those around it.

No, it isn’t. This is one of those things that needs to be dealt with immediately because mold will spread at a rapid rate and can go from just one spot on the wall to a serious health risk in a matter of days. Prolonged exposure can be extremely dangerous, so any mold issues (or even suspected mold) need to be dealt with right away.

Unfortunately, mold can grow pretty much anywhere, on any kind of surface. However, you’re most likely to see it in damp areas like basements or bathrooms, as well as anywhere there has been a water leak. Consult a local mold specialist to determine if certain areas of your home are prone to mold based on climate and other factors.
