If you don’t put gravel under concrete, the concrete can crack, sink, bow, or crumble. Even the concrete forming process will not go as smoothly if you are working directly on the soil or bare bedrock. Dry pour concrete cures in the same amount of time as wet pour concrete, so you’re looking at four to six hours for it to harden, 24 to 48 hours before you can remove forms and expose the slab to foot traffic, a week before it can stand up to vehicle traffic, and about a month for it to be fully cured.

Like all building materials, concrete weakens with age due to temperature changes, moisture, and cracks that widen over time. Keep in mind that there are ways to keep your concrete strong by resealing it every two to three years, avoiding harsh cleaning chemicals, and addressing small cracks as quickly as possible.

Visible cracks, scaling, flaking, and uneven surfaces indicate a bad concrete job. Additional signs vary depending on the project. You may notice poor drainage or even exposed rebar. Quality issues result from using the wrong concrete, rushing the work, or inexperienced workers completing the job.

Whether metal fence posts need concrete depends on the environment and the ground they're placed on. For thick earth and areas without significant weather or high wind, you can get by without concrete, but in areas with weak dirt and strong seasonal weather, it's a good idea to install a concrete base on each individual post. This increases the cost but not as much as replacing or reinstalling the fence would.
