"Our landscaping was in poor shape. We live in a very remote area. Daniel came out and we showed him what we wanted to have done. We knew it would be a two-phase job (removing existing landscaping, trees and rock on our 2 acre parcel. Then designing a new landscape and install). We were trying to get on his schedule for Spring. He was able to perform the tear out and grading immediately and when Spring comes around the new landscaping will be planted. Daniel and Shawn removed all of the old landscaping, including a tree, and trimmed trees. They were on time, thorough and cleaned up all the debris prior to leaving (the tear out took 2 days and several dump runs). Highly recommend Daniel. We can't wait to see what the new landscape design will look like. Will provide photos after phase 2 is completed in the Spring."

"We were out of town and came home to just about a perfect clean up. We had a lot of Vol damage due to heavy snows allowing the little buggers to stay warm and cozy beneath the snow pack and chew up the lawn. Common Ground cleaned up all the dead grass, leaves and blew out the flower beds. Perfect!"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

The soil around your foundation should slope down and away from your home, not toward it. If the grading drops the farther you are from your home, you can enhance the slope by removing more soil. Mark off a few feet from your house and dig up some of this soil. Regrading around your fountain should encourage water to flow away from your home and not collect or “pond.”

The best landscape edging tool depends on you and your needs. For homeowners who are looking for a budget-friendly edging material, plastic might be the best option for them. However, homeowners who want a low-maintenance option might opt for concrete or brick. Since there are loads of gardening edging ideas, decide what factors (maintenance, style, or budget) are most important to you to help you narrow your choices.

Surface-level tree roots might only pose a small threat, such as being a tripping hazard or obstacle when you mow your lawn. But if mature tree roots start growing in the direction of your home’s foundation or plumbing system, it could be a real problem. Cutting small tree roots out before they grow too large can keep your home safe without removing the whole tree.

When planting, it's best to leave several feet between a house and a juniper bush. Many juniper varieties will become quite bushy and require space to grow. Juniper branches that come into contact with siding can damage the home's exterior over time. Also, some juniper bushes have aggressive roots that can put pressure on a home's foundation or basement walls.
