For outdoor kitchen cabinets, choose wood that is naturally more weather-resistant. Teak, Brazilian walnut, white oak, and mahogany are all excellent choices. Avoid pine, cedar, and other softwoods, as they are more susceptible to damage and catch fire quickly. No matter what type of wood you choose, you’ll need to apply sealants, oils, and stains regularly to protect your cabinets from harm.

The short answer in the debate between gloss vs. stain for cabinets is it depends on the look you want to achieve. Paint with a satin finish is more low maintenance and can work for a wide variety of kitchen or bathroom styles. A gloss finish is much shinier and shows more flaws, so it should be applied by a professional painter instead of a DIY project. 

Most cabinets need two to three coats of paint, though the exact number depends on several factors. Use one or two coats of primer and one to three coats of paint. Thick, high-quality paint requires fewer coats, as does paint applied over existing paint that's in good condition.
