Door transitions can work with virtually any flooring type; however, different transition strips lend themselves better to specific flooring types. For instance, if you are bridging the gap between a taller floor, like carpet, to a shorter floor, like hardwood, then you will want a transition strip with a slight slope to bridge the height difference. These transition strips are called reducer molding. On the other hand, if you are bridging two floors of the same height, you can use flat transition strips, such as T-strips and seam binders.

Yes, installing or replacing carpet yourself is a challenging DIY project. It involves multiple steps, including the removal of old flooring, underlayment and tack strip installation, careful measuring, and stretching the carpet to prevent it from wrinkling or puckering. Expect to spend at least four days installing carpet if you decide to do it yourself.

Dry rot or severe water damage may warrant a replacement, but you don’t always need to replace damaged subflooring. If your subfloor has warped because it was installed incorrectly, you can sometimes shim the panels (in other words, add a thin, wedge-shaped piece of wood to level the surface). If you’re looking to save money on the cost of floor installation, consider removing the old flooring yourself to save on labor costs.
