"The process took awhile, but I was working with different contractors. Zykan Exteriors worked with me as certain tasks had to be completed along with their work. There were four different contractors from Zykan that worked on the house; roofers, carpenter (porch posts), soffit/facia and gutter/downspout. Of the four, the carpenter was the most friendly. I outlined how I wanted the new posts and he did as asked. He even suggested priming in the spring as the posts were still pretty wet from being treated. Although the roofers work looks good, they were not so friendly. They didn't speak English and when I got on my own ladder to look at the bathroom exhaust pipe that is close to the valley (enclosed porch on back added by previous owner) to see the decking, they started talking to each other and it just was unprofessional. Obviously, they were saying something about me, but I speak English. They also did something I have never seen before. At the end, they used a leaf blower on the roof to blow off debris. Then they used a magnetic roller to collect nails in the yard. However, the use of the leaf blower blew nails further in the yard, which I discovered long after they left. Nothing about the other two contractors, they completed their portion of the project as outlined. Now that the project is complete, I am happy with the finished product."

Garbage Collection questions, answered by experts

While the drain connection for a garbage disposal is nearly universal and fits standard sink drain holes of 3 1/2 to 4 inches, the size of the disposal unit itself is not. You must have enough space in the cabinet underneath your sink to accommodate the disposal's housing. A larger model may not fit in a compact cabinet or if the existing plumbing is arranged in an unusual way. Before buying a new garbage disposal, measure the available space under your sink. If you are replacing an old unit, it's often easiest to choose a new model of a similar size.

Your garbage disposal is not draining because it might have a clog due to food waste, a foreign object, grease, oil, fat, or it may have a broken motor. When water doesn't flush out of the disposal, that's a key sign that your disposal has a clog or needs repair.

Soil is just one of the items you shouldn't put down a garbage disposal. Garbage disposals are only meant for soft, non-fibrous foods. Large amounts of topsoil, dirt, or rocks will damage the blades of your garbage disposal or clog the pipes. If a small amount of dirt goes down the drain as you repot a plant, you shouldn't have to worry, but never dump a whole pot of soil in the sink for fast disposal.

Whether it's worth repairing your garbage disposal depends on its age and the specific problem. Generally, if the unit is eight years old or younger, repair is a good option. For minor issues like a bad seal or a simple jam, a repair can be inexpensive, sometimes under $10. However, if the motor is broken (a repair that can cost $150 or more) or the unit is getting old, it's often more cost-effective to replace the entire disposal.

Continuous feed garbage disposals are the favorite model for many homeowners for a reason. As opposed to batch feed models, add food scraps to the drain whenever the disposal is running. This variety is also typically less expensive, more convenient, and easier to clean.
