"I have used TNK 3 times, #1 - to install a new outdoor faucet with repair & replacement of pipes under the house; #2 - to install a new water heater & #3 - most recently to replace an outside light & motion sensor. These men are professional, courteous & a joy to work with. Rather than having to call a different tradesman for every issue I need help with, I call TNK Handyman Services & they have been able to help me each time. If you have a project they don't include in their services they are happy to refer you to someone who can assist you. I'm so glad I found them & you will be too."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

You definitely can over-tighten toilet tank bolts. Unlike some other materials, porcelain can’t bend or flex, so when you over-tighten a screw into it, it could break against the added pressure. Only tighten them as much as needed to keep them in place and firm; any more and you could risk breaking the porcelain.

A broken flange could lead to serious issues. When a flange breaks, the toilet is no longer secured to the subfloor, which leads to constant rocking when in use. Over time, this breaks the wax seal between the toilet and flange and causes leaking throughout the substrate, bathroom floor, and ceilings below the bathroom.

Hiring an emergency plumber is expensive because of the urgency and inconvenience, but there are a few things you can do to help keep costs down:

  • Minimize water damage by shutting off your water main

  • Clean up pooling water immediately to reduce damage and mold growth

  • Avoid using fixtures if you have a clog or septic system backup

  • Verify that your plumber is licensed before hiring

  • Call a few plumbers for estimates if you can afford a short delay in getting service

Common problems include leaks, clogs, and running water. Regular maintenance prevents most issues.

To test for toilet leaks, use water coloring in the water tank and see if the water slips into the bowl from the tank. This test will indicate if there’s a problem with the flapper or refill tube. You can also put water coloring in the bowl of the toilet to see if there is a leak there. If there is, you should see the colored water on the outside of the toilet bowl or on the floor.
