You might be able to turn a normal door into a fire-rated door, but you’re better off purchasing one that meets all NFPA 80 standards. If you want to DIY a normal door into a fire door, you’ll need a self-adhesive intumescent seal, metal hinges, fire-resistant glazing, and a self-closing device, but you’re always better off buying a certified fire door.

Steel doors have a few primary disadvantages. They’re hard to customize since they can’t be cut to fit an opening; they’re cumbersome and thus difficult to install on your own; and they don’t have the same aesthetic appeal as wood doors. Finally, while they’re highly durable and secure, they are susceptible to dents, scratches, and rusting.

The vast majority of hinges are symmetrical, and either side of the hinge can go on the door or the frame. You put shims between the three-sided frame to which the door hinges are attached and the framing of the rough wall opening. Using shims like this will center your door in the wall opening and allows you to make small adjustments to get your door plumb and level for smooth operation. Your shims and the gap they fill will be covered when you install door trim, so don’t worry too much about the appearance.
