"They were very upfront on the scope of repairs, and they were honest about the scheduled time frame. This roof repair was to replace some plywood and shingles. Zykan had done a compete shingle roof replacement within the last year. Due to that experience, we reached out to them again without any hesitation."

"Our experience was an exceptionally good one. All floors, furniture and cabinets were completely covered with drops and plastic prior to the start of painting. Quest was very neat and efficient in the process of painting the ceiling and cleaned up completely after the job was finished. The ceiling looks great. Quest had to prime some water spots and fix numerous nail pops. You cannot even tell the spots or pops were there. My husband and I are very happy with the job that Quest did for us and would not hesitate to hire him again. We highly recommend Quest Painting, LLC."

"Very happy with this company. They were dependable. Always showed up and on time. Did exactly what they said they would do, when they said they would do it. Our decks look brand new. They are also a pleasure to have working in your space. Very, very good people. I will 100% use again and have already referred to others."

"Tyler was first to respond to my request, came onto site on time, assessed the work that needed to be done, made a few suggestions, and gave me a price - all within 30 minutes! He came back the next day and completed the repair - better than I really expected and took $ off the quoted price because materials were not as expensive as he thought they might be. He did a wonderful job overall and I will be keeping his number on hand for any more handyman chores that may come up."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Deck skirting shouldn’t touch the ground, especially if you have a wood deck, which is vulnerable to moisture. Ideally, you should leave at least 3/4 of an inch of space between the deck skirting and the ground for more ventilation. Pros also recommend that you incorporate about 1 square foot of space for ventilation for the underside of the deck to every 150 square feet of decking. Proper ventilation prevents mold growth and rot that can damage your deck.

When building an outdoor or deck gate, it's crucial to use durable wood that can withstand harsh weather conditions like sunlight, rain, wind, and snow. Redwood and cedar are excellent choices as they naturally resist decay. While redwood is considered more elegant, cedar is a more affordable option. Other suitable woods include oak and pressure-treated pine, which is specifically treated to resist rot. Although some softwoods like pine are popular, untreated softwoods such as pine and spruce should generally be avoided for outdoor projects because they are susceptible to damage from water, rot, and the sun. Ultimately, it's wise to consider your local climate when selecting the right wood for your gate.

The best way to clean your decking is to clear debris from the gaps between the boards, sweep the surface, rinse it, apply cleaner, rinse again, and let it dry fully. A homemade deck cleaner made of two gallons of warm water and 1/2 cup vinegar is a simple cleaning solution for both wood and composite decking. You can sprinkle baking soda on any spots with mold or mildew, then scrub the area and rinse clean.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
