"I purchased a special deal through Angieslist, $99 for chimney sweep and $200 dollar worth of masonry/Chimney repair. The crew arrived on time and were very polite. When I showed them the woodburning stove insert they both seemed confused by it, they said they weren't familiar with inserts and weren't really sure how it worked. They cleaned it out but were not able to look in the chimney because of the way it was set up. One of the gentleman told me its fine to use as long as smoke doesn't start to come in the house. Obviously. I was under the impression that people that bill themselves as chimney sweeps would be able to figure out how to check out the actual chimney.
Our house has another chimney in the rear that is not in use. There are gaps in the brick where the mortar has fallen out. I figured I'd use the $200 credit towards having them pointed. The gentleman went up on the roof and inspected the chimney. He said the chimney needed to be capped, rain was getting in and that was causing the erosion. Makes sense, during my home inspection the previous year we were told to have it done somewhere down the line. He said he would cap the chimney and seal the concrete around the chimney on the roof for an additional $200. He said there was no need to point the brickwork once the chimney is capped. The guys went on the roof for maybe 15 minutes and installed the cap and I guess seal something or other. I don't have a 40' ladder to get on the roof and actually see what they did but it couldn't have been much as they were only up there a few minutes and I didn't see them carry up any concrete. I suspect they probably used mortar sealant caulk which is fine but doesn't really equate to the price charged. My main gripe is that I paid $500 (99, 200 credit, 200 at time of service) for them to vacuum my fireplace insert and install a cap (found on home depot.com for $80) on the chimney. I get the feeling that when you buy this $99 deal they not really honoring the $200 credit. I'm no expert on this sort of thing but I don't think the work that was performed was anywhere near $500 worth. I also got the feeling they were in a bit of a hurry and that's part of the reason they didn't want to do the pointing work.

"Thank you so much for everything! As we're selling the house, I used a another chimney professional recommended by our realtor to inspect and clean our chimney. I wish I had gone with AAA Affordable from the start! The other guy wanted to charge me a $1000 for work that mostly wasn't needed, with 50% of the total cost paid upfront. Thank God I called AAA for another opinion! AAA Affordable had absolutely no down payment and only fixed what was actually broken (in this case, the damper). When he learned that I had been taken advantage of by the last chimney guy, Ronnie fixed a crack in the firebox, painted the firebox and screen, and cleaned the chimney at no extra cost, even after I offered to pay for his extra work. He's a great guy, a hard worker, and a smart businessman. I've had some bad run-ins with contractors in the past, and it's great to finally meet a guy with integrity. You can't go wrong with AAA Affordable."

"They did a great job. They solved all the problems I had with the chimney and it’s been working perfectly ever since. They also fixed a problem on the roof around the chimney; they replaced the wood around the chimney with a material that would never rot, so they fixed it even better than it was before. It took them a couple of days to do the work. They took care of all the cleanup as well. We've been real happy with them."

"I took advantage of the Angie's List coupon for Duct Cleaning. Turns out my 11 year old home really did not need this service. The company was responsive and professional, but when the guys showed up they quickly realized there was not much to do.  I could have vacuumed out my vents just as well as they did with their hose system.  The technician sprayed some "cleaning solution" into the vent, normally an extra cost but provided since my vents were not that bad.  I do not recommend spending any extra money for this.  I saw no impact from having this service performed.  Even the attempt to clean out the laundry vent was minimal, as they only shove their hose in to the line about 6 inches.  The two man team was done in about 40 minutes for a three level town home.  At least they show up on time and did not drag out service, so I only missed a half a day of work.

My recommendation, unless your house is older than you, vent Duct Cleaning is not worth the expense.  Save your cash for something better."
