"Tim did an excellent job on our gravel shed pad foundation! His pricing was both reasonable and affordable, and he took the time to listen to all of our needs. "Chad and his crew are seriously the BEST! He installed a huge wooden privacy fence for us and cleaned up several different areas of our yard in the process including old tree stumps, and problem areas we had with his excavator. We were so impressed with his crew and their willingness to be creative with the fence and build up a up to large tree that we loved to include them in our fence line. I could tell after day 1 of the build that details mattered to him and the crew truly were experts in the field. I feel like we were working with the most knowledgeable crew out there and felt taken care of the entire time. Outside of being thrilled with the final product itself, Chad was the most professional and courteous guy we have worked with! His communication was top notch and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. THANK YOU CS Excavating and Fence! We will recommend you to all of our friends and family."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Trenchers can dig holes as narrow as 4 inches or as wide as 4 feet. Check the specifications of the trencher you rent or buy to determine how wide it will cut into the landscape. Better yet, let the excavation company know how wide you’d like the trench to be, and they can help you choose the right trencher for the job (or do it for you).

Your contractor should handle dust control during the project. It's best to speak with your contractor beforehand to check if they plan to cover your furniture, protect your vents, or use fans to redirect dust. Eliminating drywall dust is a particularly large challenge during construction, so always take this into account during your planning phase.

The average cost of excavation is approximately $3,200, with typical projects ranging from $500 to $15,000. Depending on the contractor, you may be charged between $50 and $200 per cubic yard or an hourly rate of $40 to $180 for an excavation specialist. The total cost is influenced by several factors, including the project size, the amount of soil to be removed, and the soil's condition. Hard soil, tree roots, or excessive rocks and clay can increase the price, potentially adding $200 to $1,200 to the final bill. Other factors that can drive up costs include the presence of nearby structures that complicate the work or tight spaces that require manual excavation instead of heavy machinery.

A crawl space can be as little as 42 inches below the grade of your house, but this is not always recommended in flood-prone areas. At a minimum, there must be at least 16 inches of clearance between the ground and the floor joists to access the space in an emergency.

Slab foundations are more affordable than crawl spaces because they require minimal excavation, as the slab sits directly on the ground or on footers that only sink a few feet into the ground. Crawl spaces require excavation of the entire footprint of the home to several feet below the surface. Not only does that mean higher labor costs, but more materials are necessary for the concrete foundation walls.
