"Excavating Landscape Services ~ If you are looking for a qualified, honest, professional and reasonably-priced excavation contractor in either Greene, Christian, Taney, or Stone counties of Southwest Missouri, your search is finally over. Saddlebrooke, Missouri is an upscale residential development off Highway 65 between Springfield and Branson, where my wife and I were going to build a house on a beautiful idyllic lot overlooking pristine Bull Creek. Concrete footing with rebar for stem walls was poured and set years ago for a large house in Seven Pines gated subdivision. Then, our plans changed, we decided not to build ... Fast forward to the present, when we needed to restore the build lot to its original condition; which would require demolition and removal of concrete structure including rebar, excavation, adding fill dirt, and grading of lot to create a natural slope and contour suitable for mowing. A major project! Working blindly and knowing virtually nothing about demolition, landscaping, or excavation, I took on the rather daunting task of researching options and identifying qualified area excavators. During this time, I spoke with dozens of SW MO area excavators, and finally narrowed down the list to about a half dozen vetted contractors with their cost estimates. Careful marketplace analysis, referrals, a website presence, responsiveness for quote, telephone interviews, all this due diligence helped to separate the pretenders from the presenters; which all pointed in only one direction, and that was Carr Excavating and Landscaping, LLC based in Galena, Missouri. I am delighted with their work and the finished landscape project; bought in under budget and on schedule. Highly recommend Carr Excavating, simply the best, and the entire Carr Excavating and Landscaping Team was a pleasure to do business with ... Special thank you to Brent Carr and to Sheena Carr for making this such a wonderful experience, and restoring the natural beauty of 762 Seven Pines Drive, Saddlebrooke, MO 65630."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

There is no standard depth for burying a septic tank; they are typically buried anywhere from 4 inches to 4 feet underground. The final depth depends on several factors, including the depth of your main sewer line, the height of the bedrock, soil type, local regulations, and the property's landscape. If you plan to grow grass or plants over the tank, a depth of at least 4 to 6 inches is recommended. Deeper tanks can be more difficult to locate, but a septic professional can help find it for you.

You should dig 3 to 6 inches deep for plastic edging. Dig as wide as you need to fit your plastic edging into it—2 inches is usually sufficient.

You can bury underground electrical wire six inches deep—but only if you use a rigid metal electrical conduit. For rigid, non-metallic conduits, bury the wire at least 12 inches deep. If using an underground feeder cable rated for direct burial, you'll need to place it at least 18 inches deep, as it has no conduit for extra protection.

Tree experts don’t advise against digging through tree roots, but instead encourage caution and consultation with a local arborist to make sure you don’t damage the tree’s structure or interrupt its water or nutrient intake. An arborist can recommend specific practices when digging and help prune the roots or dig a trench for utilities with a tool that can remove soil without touching the tree’s roots.

Trenchers can dig holes as narrow as 4 inches or as wide as 4 feet. Check the specifications of the trencher you rent or buy to determine how wide it will cut into the landscape. Better yet, let the excavation company know how wide you’d like the trench to be, and they can help you choose the right trencher for the job (or do it for you).
